Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) has joined forces with numerous organizations to aid 15 schools in Nelson Mandela Bay, which is currently experiencing a water crisis. In collaboration with Old Mutual, VWSA recently erected 30 water tanks for 15 schools in Kariega and Despatch. There were 15 tanks, each with a capacity of 5000 litres, funded by both firms. The tanks were equipped with taps and connected to roof gutters at the schools.
Gift of the Givers donated potable water for all of the tanks, and the Rotary Club gave water purification sachets to all of the schools. In addition to the tanks, VWSA helped to alleviate the water crisis by repairing leaks and replacing plumbing, including toilets, taps, and pipes, at 19 Nelson Mandela Bay schools.
This project is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber’s Adopt a School campaign, which encourages local businesses to help with water conservation in schools. VWSA has been a long-term supporter of this program, supplying 30 water tanks to 15 schools and undertaking plumbing repairs at five KwaNobuhle schools as part of the August 2021 initiative.
VWSA is still committed to lowering its environmental effect and has done its share to conserve resources such as water. Between 2010 and 2021, the company lowered its water usage by 65% and developed an on-site wastewater recycling system to reuse water for production processes and minimize freshwater consumption at the Kariega plant. The organization is still looking into new ways to ensure the efficient and responsible use of natural resources.
“As a manufacturer, VWSA takes pride in ecologically responsible procedures; as a corporate citizen, we strive to empower and enhance the communities in which we work,”
said Nonkqubela Maliza, VWSA’s Corporate and Government Affairs Director.
“This effort brings these two agendas together. We are also helping learners’ educational journeys by improving their access to water, in keeping with the Community Trust’s ongoing belief that quality education is the key to a bright future.”
