The new Audi Q5 finds its rhythm on the Cape’s mountain roads

By Aurelia Mbokazi

The dreaded 6.30am flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town meant a sleepless night. I spent hours worrying about missing it, knowing the morning crowds at the airport would do little to calm my nerves.

But a few hours later, behind the wheel of the new Audi Q5 with the Cape’s green landscape unfolding around me, that early start began to feel worthwhile.

An effortless introduction

My first drive began at Cape Town International Airport in the diesel TDI, heading towards Paarl. Quiet, responsive and buttery smooth, it made an immediate impression.

There was an effortless strength to the way it pulled away, with power arriving smoothly whenever I needed it. Through traffic, at crawling speeds and out on the open road, it felt composed and easy to drive. This was a diesel that went about its business with very little fuss.

As we headed towards the mountains, I could picture that same comfort fitting into everyday life, from school runs and meetings to a much-needed weekend away.

Now in its third generation, the Q5 already has a strong local following. According to Audi’s launch presentation, South Africans bought around 19,500 across the first two generations. After spending a day with it, I understood the appeal.

A cabin worth settling into

Inside, the beautifully finished cabin felt inviting, with soft materials and a modern layout. Audi has clearly given plenty of thought to how people spend time in this space.

The separate passenger screen was a highlight, giving my co-driver something of his own to explore. He took charge of the music, and with such magnificent sound filling the cabin, I happily left the soundtrack to him.

The ambience settings added another lovely touch, allowing us to adjust the cabin’s atmosphere to suit the mood.

Between the music, easy conversation and mountain views along the roads between Paarl and Franschhoek, there was plenty to enjoy. The car felt comfortable enough for us to settle in and enjoy the journey.

The SQ5 brings out the playful side

That engine note! My otherwise sensible co-driver seemed to rediscover his inner boy, delighting in every opportunity to hear it. Driving through a tunnel was a particular highlight, and his enjoyment was infectious.

After the quiet confidence of the diesel, the SQ5 brought a playful energy to the day. Both had their charm, although the TDI’s smoothness had already won me over.

Winding roads, wine farms and little stops along the route gave us time to appreciate the cars and the beautiful setting around them.

Lunch and a smiling farewell

Lunch at La Motte in Franschhoek was a fitting way to round off the outing. Lovely food, excellent coffee and good company gave us every reason to linger.

Audi’s executives were also readily available throughout the day, chatting with the media and answering questions about the cars and the brand’s plans for South Africa. Those relaxed conversations added a welcome warmth to the experience.

By the time we returned to the airport and I boarded the 6pm flight to Johannesburg, the lack of sleep had caught up with me. I was exhausted, but smiling.

A day of smooth driving, magnificent mountains and a little SQ5 mischief had been well worth the early alarm. These experiences really do never get old.
