Rising above Sandton’s skyline, The Leonardo is South Africa’s tallest building and a
landmark in Africa’s richest square mile. More than world-class accommodation, it’s a mixed-use space where you can live, work, shop, view curated art, and indulge in
exceptional dining. From luxury apartments and retail to fine restaurants and
breathtaking views, The Leonardo embodies modern Johannesburg—sophisticated, vibrant, and endlessly inspiring.

Recently, I joined VW South Africa for the launch of the Tayron, which was hosted across The Leonardo’s dining spaces. The event highlighted just how seamlessly this
venue transforms meals into memorable experiences, elevating Johannesburg into a city seen in a striking new light. Across the rooftop, the seventh floor, and the hotel lounge, each space revealed a different flavour of Joburg’s energy and elegance.
Alto 234
Perched on the rooftop, Alto 234 is where Johannesburg reveals itself in 360 degrees. As the sun sets, the skyline glows, and the city gradually shifts into its nightlife rhythm. This is the ultimate spot for tapas and cocktails—light bites that pair perfectly with expertly mixed drinks. Standing at the highest point in the country, you genuinely feel on top of the world. It’s more than a bar; it’s an atmosphere that combines thrill with sophistication, an experience that lingers long after the glass is empty.

Aurum and the Octo Bar
On the seventh floor, Aurum and its adjoining Octo Bar create a refined yet relaxed
dining and social experience. Overlooking the pool, Octo Bar is casual enough for
catch-ups but still stylish, with a veranda that opens to striking views of Sandton. The service strikes the right balance—warm, efficient, and attentive, even with larger groups.

Our evening began with a set menu of starters; an artful mix of vegetarian and meat dishes that were beautifully balanced. The mains were equally impressive: steak, fish, and pasta executed to perfection, each dish marrying classic recipes with a modern, seasonal flair. Dessert followed in the same vein—light, elegant, and memorable, the ideal close to a well-curated meal. Outside of private events, Octo Bar is famous for its pizzas, widely rated among the best in Johannesburg. The menu also leans into Italian-inspired light meals and boasts a wide selection of cocktails, beers, and fine whiskies. It’s a space where elegance and comfort meet, perfect for winding down or celebrating.

Leo’s Lounge
Mornings at The Leonardo are best spent at Leo’s Lounge, where breakfast is elevated to an occasion. The menu ranges from hearty English spreads to lighter options with a creative twist, ensuring something for every palate. Whether you’re a hotel guest or simply booking in for breakfast, the experience is polished, thoughtful, and sets the tone for the day ahead.

A Complete Experience
The Leonardo offers more than dining, it delivers a curated experience of elegance,
energy, and luxury in Sandton. Whether it’s sipping cocktails against a beautiful sunset at Alto 234, enjoying refined cuisine at Aurum, or beginning the day at Leo’s Lounge, this iconic landmark captures Johannesburg’s mystique and class at its very finest.
