ASK MABS-Guide to buying a used car

Hi Mabs!

I’m in the market for a reliable used car, but I’ve heard some horror stories of people who thought they were buying their dream car, only for it to turn into a nightmare. What should I look out for when buying a used car?

Mabs answers
Owing to our economy that is not doing well, the used car market is most vibrant in South Africa right now as consumers search for bargains. But before you venture out there and get a used car – or pre-owned, as dealerships prefer to call them – first do your homework. A little diligence now saves you from expensive headaches later.

Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Set a Budget: Factor in additional costs like insurance, registration, and potential repairs.
  2. Research Reliable Models: Look for brands known for durability and affordable
    parts.
  3. Inspect the Car: Check for rust, dents, and tyre wear in the car you are interested in, and ensure all lights and electronics work.
  4. Check Service History: A full-service record shows the car has been well
    maintained.
  5. Test Drive: Test how it handles, brakes, and accelerates. Listen for unusual
    noises.
  6. Verify Ownership and Mileage: Ensure the paperwork matches the seller’s details and that mileage isn’t suspiciously low for the car’s age.
  7. Get an Independent Inspection: Have a trusted mechanic inspect the vehicle for
    peace of mind.
