Hello Mabs
I have heard that some cars are more prone to theft than others. What are
the most commonly stolen cars in South Africa and how can I protect my vehicle?

Mabs Answers:
You’re right to be cautious. In South Africa, car theft often follows trends. Best-selling brands like Toyota and VW often top the list of hijacked cars simply because they sell in large volumes. But that doesn’t mean other cars are immune. Thieves are mostly opportunistic and will take whatever is easy to grab.

Here’s how to make sure your car isn’t one of them, and more importantly, how to
protect yourself and your asset.
First, be mindful of where and when you drive. Avoid poorly lit areas, especially at night, and steer clear of unfamiliar neighbourhoods if you can. If your gut tells you something’s off, like a car following you, don’t hesitate: drive straight to the nearest police station or well-lit petrol station.

Always keep your doors locked and windows up when driving or stopped at traffic lights. Avoid distractions like texting while behind the wheel or sitting idly in your driveway. Install a tracking device or anti-theft system. Also, investing in a defensive driving course can teach you how to react in hijack situations without panic. It’s not about being paranoid, but being alert and prepared.

Lastly, never argue with a hijacker. Your life is far more valuable than your car. Hand
over the keys and step away safely. The goal is always to get home in one piece.
Stay safe on the road!
