ASK MABS-Car Ownership Transfer: What You Need to Know

Hi Mabs

I recently bought a car from someone I know, and I am not sure what process to follow in order to register it in my name. What is the best way to transfer ownership? Please walk me through the process.

Mabs Answers

Great question! The easiest way is to head to your local traffic department with the person who sold you the car. The seller will need to fill in a Notification of Change of Ownership (NCO) form and hand over the car’s registration certificate.

Make sure the seller completes the NCO form and hands over the registration certificate at your local traffic department.

Your part? Complete the Application for Registration and Licensing of Motor Vehicle (RLV) form. You’ll also need a valid roadworthy certificate, your ID, and proof of address.

Don’t delay, you have 21 days to register the car in your name to avoid penalties. It’s a simple process, and doing it right gives you peace of mind and legal protection. Once done, you can enjoy your new ride without worry!
