ASK MABS-Loud Start-Up? Here’s Why Your Car Sounds Like a Truck When Cold

Hello Mabs

Whenever I start my car, it makes a loud noise similar to that of a truck. However, after a few minutes, the car cools down, and there is no sound from the engine. What could be the cause?

Mabs Answers:
I had to check in with my industry friends who are expert mechanics and know
everything under the hood. Here’s what I learned could be a problem with your vehicle. It turns out that the loud, truck-like noise when you start your car can be linked to a worn or loose exhaust component, such as the manifold or flex pipe. Here’s a bit of science behind it. When the engine is cold, metal parts contract slightly, and gaps or cracks can create more noise. As it warms, the metal expands, sealing those gaps and quietening things down.

Loud Cold Starts? It could be a loose exhaust part. Cold metal contracts, causing noise, then quiets as it warms up.

Another common cause is a cold start, where the engine revs higher to warm up quickly. This is normal, especially since we are in winter. Noticing small changes like this can save you from bigger problems later. I’d say book an appointment for your car to be checked by your trusted mechanic or exhaust specialist so you can have complete peace of mind. After all, it is always better to be safe than stranded!
