Hello Mabs
I’m going to be driving six hours to start university in another province. This will be my first long road trip, and I’m feeling nervous about both the drive and the car itself. I’m not sure what checks I should do beforehand or how to prepare mentally for hours on the road. What would you advise for peace of mind?

Mabs Answers:
Nerves are completely normal, especially if it’s your first long trip. Start with the basics: check tyre pressure (including the spare), oil, water, brakes and lights. Make sure your licence disc is valid and your insurance details are handy. Plan your route, factor in rest stops, and don’t rush, fatigue causes more accidents than people realise. On South African roads, patience is a superpower. Take breaks, stay hydrated, and listen to your body. The confidence will come with time. Remember, it’s not about how fast you arrive but about arriving safely and relaxed.
