H6 PHEV gives Haval a seat at the table

By Mabuyane Mabuza

There is something to be said about consistency, and GWM has earned that conversation. Now celebrating 19 years in South Africa, it stands as the longest- running Chinese automotive player in the country. This has not been a story of overnight success, but one of steady, deliberate growth.

For those with a bit of motoring memory, GWM’s early days were defined by humble bakkies and SUVs that did not attract much attention. Over time, the designs sharpened and matured, even if the powertrains did not always keep pace. That is beginning to change.

With the shift towards plug-in hybrid technology, GWM is entering a new phase. The launch of the Haval H6 PHEV signals intent, and it is a clear one.

Last week, I attended the local launch, where it became evident that GWM is ready to compete more directly with players like the Chery Group, who have made strong inroads in the plug-in hybrid space.

More importantly, this move aligns with a growing appetite for efficiency, performance and smarter mobility. With fuel costs remaining a constant concern, plug-in hybrids are no longer a niche. They are becoming a serious consideration for everyday motorists.

First Impressions

Haval’s design language continues to impress in a quiet, understated way. While some rivals lean into bold and sometimes polarising styling, Haval takes a more restrained approach.

The H6 PHEV is clean, well-proportioned and elegant without trying too hard. It has presence, but it does not demand attention. It is the kind of SUV that grows on you.

The Drive

I will admit that plug-in hybrids are fast becoming a personal favourite. There is a balance to them that feels well suited to modern driving. You get the calm of electric driving when you need it, and the reassurance of combustion power when you want it.

Our drive took us from Midrand through the north-western stretches of Gauteng towards Hartbeespoort Dam. It is a route that offers a mix of highway cruising and relaxed scenic driving. The H6 PHEV handled it all with ease.

Truthfully, I was not watching fuel consumption too closely. I was paired with an old colleague, and the drive was filled with conversation and laughter. But what stood out was that the fuel needle had barely moved by the time we returned to Midrand. On the road, the H6 PHEV feels refined and intuitive. It delivers performance in a way that almost makes you forget that efficiency is part of the equation.

The Powertrain

At the heart of the H6 PHEV is a plug-in hybrid system that combines a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and battery.

The result is impressive output, placing it comfortably among the more powerful options in its segment. The electric motor delivers instant torque, making acceleration feel responsive and smooth. The petrol engine steps in seamlessly for longer drives, ensuring consistent performance.

What stands out is the flexibility. Short daily commutes can be handled largely on electric power, reducing fuel consumption. Longer trips are supported by the petrol engine, removing the range anxiety often associated with fully electric vehicles. For South African motorists, this balance makes sense.

Technology

Inside, the H6 PHEV continues to build on its appeal. The cabin is anchored by a large infotainment display, paired with a fully digital instrument cluster. The interface is clean, responsive and easy to navigate.

Wireless smartphone integration, multiple USB ports and thoughtful connectivity features ensure the cabin feels in step with modern needs.

Driver assistance systems are also well covered. Adaptive cruise control, lane- keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring and autonomous emergency braking all contribute to a more relaxed and confident driving experience. Importantly, the technology feels purposeful. It is there to enhance the drive, not overwhelm it.
