Make Big Moves into Luxury SUVs with new OMODA C9

By Prashirwin Naidu

OMODA South Africa revealed the new C9 luxury flagship model to an exclusive
audience in Fourways, Johannesburg. The event gave guests a chance to get an up-
close look at what this stylish SUV has to offer. After experiencing the futuristic OMODA C5 recently, I was impressed by its technology, design, and striking exterior. However, the driving performance left me slightly underwhelmed. While the car had sufficient power, the gear shifts weren’t as smooth as expected, and the revs felt unsettling. The suspension was firmer than I preferred, lacking the comfort I had anticipated.
However, I’m eager to see if the OMODA C9 will tick all the right boxes.

OMODA C9

Here’s what Mzansi’s motorists can look forward to in this ‘bigger OMODA’
The new OMODA C9 is bigger, bolder, and more extravagant than its smaller sibling. It made its debut at last year’s Festival of Motoring, sparking interest as Chinese
carmakers try to break into the luxury automotive market, which has long been
dominated by German and Japanese brands. Chinese car brands have been on a mission to attract budget-conscious consumers by offering luxury at lower prices, putting pressure on their German competitors. The incoming OMODA C9 uses the same strategy, with an entry price point of R800 000 – a good deal for what it offers.

The OMODA C9 offering:
The OMODA C9 Like the OMODA C5, it features coupe-SUV styling with a sloping roof. It stands out with its sleek design and smooth lines. However, the ‘wow’ factor is the four exhaust pipes. You can also spot design elements from Chery’s (OMODA’s parent company) 2012 collaboration with Jaguar Land Rover, such as the pop-out door handles found on the Range Rover Velar.

The interior
Motorists can expect premium features such as plush leather on the seats and steering wheel. All seats, including the rear ones, offer massage functions, heating, cooling, and electrical adjustments for reclining and moving forward or backward. The boot is accessible via a powered tailgate. At the front, a floating centre console divides the passengers, further elevating the premium feel. The OMODA C9 is designed for tech enthusiasts, featuring a panoramic sunroof, a curved display, augmented-reality navigation, facial recognition, a nine-speaker Sony
sound system, and a 50W ultra-fast wireless charger.

It is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre engine and features an all-wheel-drive system. I, along with many other motorists in Mzansi, can’t wait to drive the highly anticipated OMODA C9. While the design is impressive, I’m eager to see if the comfort measures up.

It is expected to launch in South Africa in October 2024, with an estimated retail price of R800 000 to R850 000.
