Ask Mabs: How Can I Overcome My Fear of Driving at Night?

Hello Mabs

I have never driven at night outside the city because I get nervous around trucks and high beams. My family says I am overthinking it, but I avoid evening trips whenever I can.

How do I become a more confident night-time driver?

Mabs answers:

Firstly, thank you for saying this out loud. You are certainly not the only person who feels this way.

Night driving demands a little more from us because visibility is reduced and judging speed and distance becomes more difficult. The good news is that confidence can be built.

Start with shorter evening drives on familiar roads before attempting longer trips. Keep your windscreen clean inside and out, make sure your headlights are working properly and avoid looking directly into oncoming headlights. Instead, focus slightly towards the left-hand edge of your lane until the vehicle has passed.

Most importantly, do not let anyone pressure you into driving faster than you are comfortable with. A confident driver is not the quickest driver. It is the one making calm, informed decisions every kilometre of the journey.
