Hello Mabs
Whenever I take my car in for a service, I feel intimidated because I don't understand the terminology. I'm worried I'll agree to repairs I don't actually need. How do I avoid being taken advantage of?

Mabs Answers
Firstly, please don't mistake unfamiliar language for a lack of intelligence. Nobody expects you to know every mechanical term, just as you wouldn't expect your mechanic to understand your profession overnight.
Before authorising additional work, ask the workshop to explain why it's needed, whether it's urgent and what could happen if you delay it. A reputable workshop should be happy to show you the worn part or explain it in plain language.
If you're unsure, ask for a written quotation and take a little time to consider it. There's nothing wrong with getting a second opinion. If you believe you've received poor workmanship or unfair treatment, you can contact the Motor Industry Ombudsman of South Africa (MIOSA) for assistance.
Knowledge isn't about knowing every answer. It's about feeling confident enough to ask the questions.
