A colleague recently posted a cheeky question on Facebook about South Africans’ newfound “hate for sedans.”
The post was humorous, but the question was still valid, even after we had a good laugh.
In recent years, the South African car market has shifted from traditional sedans to SUVs and bakkies.
We have always been a bakkie market, but modern bakkies have expanded to attract motorists who wouldn’t ordinarily buy a bakkie. Given this trend, it’s no wonder sedan sales have declined in recent years.
Yet, some sedans remain exceptional and can’t be ignored or replaced. BMW’s latest 520d is one such car. I discovered its marvel during the week I spent behind the wheel.
First Impressions:
At first glance, the BMW 520d unmistakably showcases BMW’s bold design language. You see it everywhere on and in the car.
The 520d is in a class of its own. It stands out in South Africa’s SUV and bakkie-dominated market. While many motorists choose higher-clearance vehicles, the 520d remains a symbol of elegance and sophistication.
In fact, calling the 520d a “nice” car is an understatement. It’s a highly attractive vehicle that ticks all the boxes and exceptionally delivers on the spacious cabin and boot, advanced technology, safety and overall emotional appeal.
Interior and Tech:
The interior is captivating. I can’t cover every detail without overwhelming you, but let me highlight mabala a nkwe.
Upon entering the G60 BMW model, you’re greeted by the sophisticated elegance that has always been associated with the FIVE.
My eyes are instantly locked to the 8.5-inch screen, where I start xploring. This screen is the face that connects the car and the driver. It houses important functions, including entertainment, navigation, and climate control.
From the finely stitched leather upholstery to the latest infotainment systems, the 520d offers a refined and inviting cabin that’s a joy to spend time in.
The 520d is a smart and stylish choice for drivers who want to stand out from the crowd. Its striking design, technological innovations, and elegant interior show that luxury sedans still have a place in a market dominated by utility vehicles.
Within minutes, the 520d and I were well acquainted and ready to mingle for a good seven-day run.
I’m not usually big on music, I prefer the news when I’m on the move. But, when I’m in a great mood, I pump music on. Thanks to the car and its Harman/Kardon sound system, I enjoyed the smooth, high-quality sound in the 520d. Every song hits differently! I felt like I was having a special concert with each artist playing to my satisfaction.
The Drive:
Powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder diesel engine coupled by a mild hybrid for maximum fuel efficiency, you can easily achieve under 6L/100km inland if you’ve reached your calm driving season like me.
Verdict
With modern driver assistance systems and advanced connectivity options, the 520d delivers an unparalleled driving experience.
I got the thrill of driving from this car. Do not get me wrong, it is not for the fast and furious types. Rather, it gives executive vibes, delivering quiet enjoyment, and travel in style for family, work and pleasure.
