Recently, renowned radio personality Carol Ofori embarked on a “life-changing” trip to Zimbabwe’s iconic Victoria Falls with her family, proving once again that xploring Africa is not only a passion but a celebration of home. As she reflects on her family’s first international holiday, Carol shares why she chose Zimbabwe, recounts her awe-inspiring moments at the falls, and explains why this destination should be on every traveller’s bucket list.
What made you decide on visiting Zimbabwe with your family?
I have always been a massive advocate that we, as Africans, should explore more of our own continent. When it came to deciding on this holiday, my husband and I looked around to see where would be the best place to travel with small children, how long it would take to get to the destination, the activities for them to enjoy and, of course things like malaria and other diseases. We opted for Zimbabwe knowing we would have to give the kids malaria tablets daily. I had been to Zimbabwe before when I was 18 with a friend of mine and I loved it so much that I thought it would be the perfect place for us to experience our first international trip together as a family.
Tell us about your experience at the Victoria Falls?
It was absolutely majestic! To think that we were there when the falls were considered ‘dry’ is insane. The Victoria Falls are truly the majesty of God, you get to see that so clearly when visiting a place like this. It was a beautiful experience. I would suggest getting a guide when visiting – they’re clued up and make the experience a whole lot more fun and informative.
Why should this attraction be on everybody’s travel bucket list?
The Victoria Falls are one of the seven natural wonders of the world. To think that the falls belong to Zambia, but the majesty and beauty of them is in Zimbabwe (you have to leave Zambia to come and see them), is insane. Seeing everything around the falls, like the mighty Zambezi river, makes visiting all the more incredible. It’s one of those things that you actually need to see to believe.
What else should visitors do when visiting this beautiful area?
There is so much to do! If you have extra budget on your trip, look at doing a helicopter flip over the falls, The Victoria Falls are also in a nature reserve so animals are free to roam and I’ve heard there are some great sightings to be made at night. We stayed at the Elephant Hills Hotel because of the amount of wild elephants that roam the area. We also took the time to enjoy some delicious traditional Zimbabwean cuisine. We wore traditional Zimbabwean clothing, put on some make-up and took part in a drumming experience that made the evening so special. My husband and my son also went quad biking while my daughter and I enjoyed a spa treatment. However, you can’t visit the Victoria Falls without doing a cruise on the Zambezi. They’ve mastered the whole experience for guests. On the cruise you are served a light meal, unlimited drinks and get to take in the river views for two hours. Oh, and if you’re feeling brave – check out Devil’s Pool which is in the Zambian side of the falls!
Which African country are you thinking of visiting next and why?
I’d love to take my family to Namibia next. Swakopmund looks absolutely incredible and I know the country has some incredible beaches to enjoy. Egypt and Kenya are also very high on my travel bucket list.
