When you’re the market leader and one of South Africa’s best-selling models, the spotlight is always on you. There’s no denying the impact of the Corolla Cross in South Africa. Consumers continue to vote with their wallets, and the latest version is set to strengthen its position as a top choice. Whether you’re after reliability, efficiency or simply a stylish and practical SUV, the Corolla Cross ticks all the boxes.
The Corolla Cross continues to master the art of hitting that sweet spot. It’s a winning formula that blends generous cabin and boot space, sharp styling, and the reassurance of a trusted badge. With this package, consumers enjoy not just great comfort but also peace of mind, knowing they’re driving a brand that has been tried, tested, and loved across generations.
The latest generation Corolla Cross made its way just in time for Toyota’s annual State of the Motoring Industry address. While many expected a deep dive into the challenges facing the industry, it was this striking new model that stole the show. With a bold new front grille and sleek, refined lines, it’s clear that Toyota has doubled down on what makes this car a winner.
For the latest model, Toyota has gone the extra mile to perfect the ‘look and feel’. From the moment you step inside, you’re greeted by a spacious cabin that just feels right. It’s familiar yet exciting, with subtle tweaks that elevate the driving experience. You feel instantly comfortable but can’t help getting a little giddy at all the thoughtful updates. It’s practical, stylish and now even more enticing – perfect for those who want bragging rights with a touch of sophistication.

First look
In a world where grilles are getting bigger and bolder, the Corolla Cross offers a
refreshing take with its new geometric bumper and sleek, redesigned LED headlights. It’s a look that will resonate with those seeking something a little different. The bold design exudes athleticism and confidence, ensuring it stands out in the crowd without trying too hard.

Step inside, and the sense of space immediately strikes you. The cabin feels light, airy, and thoughtfully designed. It’s easy to picture a family of four embarking on a scenic South African road trip, enjoying the roomy interior while taking in the country’s natural beauty.

But the upgrades don’t stop there. Toyota has pushed the envelope with two daring new colours – Desert Gold and Oxide Bronze. These shades aren’t just vibrant; they add a layer of personality to an already standout vehicle. Desert Gold, in particular, shimmers under the Highveld sun, making a bold statement for anyone behind the wheel. During the presentation, it was revealed that the Corolla Cross is especially popular with the 30 to 49 age group, a mix of families and independent individuals who value space, reliability, and the legacy of a trusted brand. You can easily see these adventurous souls opting for the bold Desert Gold, adding a splash of individuality to their journey.

First drive:
After the presentation, we couldn’t wait to see how the Corolla Cross balances “urban lifestyle and luxury with the excitement of an SUV.” Our test drive took us through Joburg’s leafy suburbs, out to the Cradle of Humankind, and back to Melrose Arch. While the route didn’t include any off-road challenges, it didn’t need to. The typical Corolla Cross driver isn’t looking for hardcore off-roading but can rest easy knowing the car is capable of handling a gravel stretch when needed, all while maintaining comfort.
On Joburg’s roads, the closest we came to off-roading were the inevitable potholes, which we did our best to avoid. Both the petrol and hybrid variants impressed with their smooth handling and remarkably quiet engines, delivering a relaxed, enjoyable drive throughout. This is a car designed to excel in the city, while still being ready for a bit of adventure – just as its fans would expect.

Innovation and Technology:
The Corolla Cross seamlessly blends technology, safety, and convenience, making it a top choice for South African buyers. Built on Toyota’s QDR philosophy (Quality,
Durability, and Reliability), it features advanced safety tech, including Lane Keeping
Assist, a Pre-Crash System, and Blind Spot Monitoring, ensuring peace of mind on
every journey. Convenience is key, with a kick-sensor boot for hands-free access and
seamless smartphone connectivity via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 12.3-inch (in the XR and GR-S Models) Multi-Information Display keeps essential vehicle data at a glance, while its stylish design and practical features make it perfect for daily commutes and family adventures.

Verdict:
The Corolla Cross Hybrid takes this best-seller to the next level, especially at a time
when sustainability is a top priority. Driving one feels like a small win for the planet, and there’s extra pride in knowing that its hybrid technology is locally manufactured in South Africa. As the first major car launch of the year, the Corolla Cross has set the bar high, we hope the rest of 2025 brings just as much excitement on the road!
