This Easter weekend brought a flicker of hope to South Africa’s roads. Transport Minister Barbara Creecy announced a significant 45.6 % drop in road fatalities, from 307 in 2024 to 167 in 2025. The number of crashes also fell by over 32%. For once, the statistics do not just reflect loss. They point to progress. While provinces like the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga saw increases in fatalities, the broader picture suggests something is working. Perhaps it is better planning, heightened awareness, or just drivers making smarter decisions. Whatever the reason, we now have a foundation worth protecting.
So how do we make road safety a lifestyle and not just a seasonal slogan? Here are
practical, feel-good tips that help keep us safe without taking the joy out of travel.
Rest Before You Drive
Too many accidents come down to tired drivers behind the wheel. Make rest a non-
negotiable. Plan your trip to include overnight stops on long routes and share driving duties if possible. If you are tired, stop. No destination is worth your life and those of other road users.

Make Vehicle Checks a Habit
Before every trip, even short ones, do a quick walk-around of your car. Check tyre
pressure, oil and water levels, lights and wipers. Book a full service before long-distance travel. Your vehicle is your travel partner – treat it with care.

Use the Left Lane, Overtake with Respect
Keep left and pass right. It is simple, respectful and safe. Tailgating and aggressive
overtaking increase risk for everyone. Rather arrive five minutes later than not at all.

Keep Children Safe and Comfortable
If travelling with little ones, ensure they are secured in proper car seats and have
enough snacks, water and entertainment. Take breaks every two to three hours. Happy, secure children make for a far less stressful drive.

Choose Safe Stops
Plan your route and rest stops ahead of time. Choose petrol stations or rest areas in
well-lit, secure places. Avoid pulling over in remote areas unless in absolute emergencies.

Celebrate Sobriety Behind the Wheel
Driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes. Choose designated drivers, book a ride-share or use shuttle services after big family meals or social events. Making it home safely is the ultimate celebration.

Lead by Example
Our children, younger siblings and passengers watch how we drive. Buckle up. Obey
the speed limit. Stay off your phone. Let us raise a generation that respects the rules of the road because they have seen us do it.
