Suzuki Swift: Small Car With a Big Personality

By Aurelia Mbokazi-Kashe

For the past month, the Suzuki Swift has quietly slipped into my daily rhythm and made itself at home. It has reminded me why I have always had a soft spot for small cars.

While many drivers gravitate towards bigger vehicles for the sense of security and road presence they bring, I find freedom in something smaller. There is a youthful energy to the Swift. It feels light on its feet, eager, and ready to move. Whether it is weaving through morning traffic or slipping into tight parking spaces at school drop-offs, it turns everyday errands into something far less stressful and far more enjoyable.

Daily commute in style

The school run, in particular, has become effortless. Dropping off and collecting my two teenagers is no longer something I brace myself for. Instead, it is smooth, quick and, surprisingly, fun. There is no second-guessing parking spots or worrying about squeezing into narrow spaces. The Swift simply fits into my life, rather than asking me to adjust to it.

On the road, there is also a subtle advantage to driving a smaller car. You are less intimidating. Drivers are more likely to let you in, traffic feels less confrontational, and the overall experience becomes calmer. It is a small detail, but one that makes a noticeable difference in daily driving.

Interior

Inside, the cabin is just as considered. The dark, body-hugging seats are not only comfortable but practical. They wear well, stay clean, and hold you in place in a way that makes even short drives feel composed. It is not overly complicated or flashy, but it gets the fundamentals right, and that is what matters.

Then there is the reality of fuel. At a time when global uncertainty continues to influence fuel prices, there is genuine comfort in knowing that filling up does not come with a sense of dread. Being able to top up the tank for under R600 brings a level of ease that is hard to ignore. It allows you to drive without constantly calculating your next fuel stop.

The Drive

The manual transmission adds to the experience. It is light, responsive and easy to use, with a slightly playful edge that gives the car a go-kart-like feel. It keeps you engaged, connected to the drive, and makes even familiar routes feel fresh.

I have come to affectionately call it “Little Suzy”, and over this past month, it has been good to me. It has simplified my routine, reduced my stress, and reminded me that driving does not always have to be serious.

Sometimes, it is about enjoying the journey. And in a car like the Suzuki Swift, that enjoyment comes naturally.
