No Plans? No Problem: How to Unlock a Last-Minute Long Weekend Escape

By Gugulethu Tshabalala

There is something about a long weekend that makes staying home feel like a missed opportunity. The only problem? Sometimes you only realise how badly you need a break when Thursday arrives, everyone else seems to have plans, and you have booked absolutely nothing.

The good news is that spontaneous travel does not have to mean expensive travel, limited choices or settling for whatever is left. With a little flexibility and a different approach to planning, you can still turn a last-minute decision into a memorable escape.

If you have suddenly decided that you need to get away, breathe and see something different this long weekend, here is how to make it happen.

Start With Distance, Not Destination

One of the biggest mistakes you can make when planning at the last minute is becoming fixated on a particular destination.

Popular long-weekend spots may already be heavily booked, so instead of starting your search with where you want to go, start with how far you are prepared to travel.

Would you happily drive for two hours? Three? Maybe four?

Once you know your radius, start looking at the towns, nature reserves, country escapes and smaller destinations that fall within it. You may discover places you would never have considered if you had started with the usual tourism hotspots.

Sometimes the best weekend away is closer than you think.

Let Availability Choose the Adventure

Last-minute travel requires a small mindset shift: search for what is available before deciding exactly where you are going.

Instead of spending hours searching for accommodation in one destination, widen your search. Look at guesthouses, boutique hotels, lodges, farm stays, self-catering cottages and bed-and-breakfast establishments across several areas.

A cancellation could suddenly make a beautiful property available for the weekend.

If you find somewhere interesting, do not be afraid to pick up the phone. Booking platforms are convenient, but calling a property directly may uncover a cancellation, a room that has not yet been relisted or even a last-minute rate.

Your accommodation could end up choosing the destination for you, and that can be part of the fun.

You Don't Have to Go Away for the Entire Weekend

A long weekend does not automatically require a three or four-night booking.

If accommodation prices are high or availability is limited, consider going away for just one or two nights.

Leave early on Saturday, spend the night somewhere beautiful and return on Sunday evening. Or travel on Sunday and come back on Monday.

A shorter trip can still provide the change of scenery you need without putting unnecessary pressure on your budget.

The goal is not to squeeze every possible hour out of the public holiday. It is to come back feeling like you actually had a break.

Work Out Your Budget Before You Start Browsing

Spontaneous decisions can become expensive very quickly, particularly when excitement takes over.

Before opening accommodation websites, decide how much you are comfortable spending on the entire getaway.

Think beyond the room rate. Your budget should account for accommodation, fuel or transport, meals, activities, tolls where applicable and a little extra for unexpected expenses.

Once you have your number, work backwards.

If the accommodation you love consumes almost the entire budget, keep looking. A simpler place to sleep may leave you with enough money for a great meal, an activity or another experience that makes the trip worthwhile.

Look Beyond the Obvious Accommodation Options

When hotels appear fully booked, do not assume the destination is off the table.

Long weekends are a great time to look beyond traditional hotels. Guesthouses, B&Bs, farm stays, self-catering cottages and smaller independent properties can offer excellent alternatives.

Being flexible about exactly where you sleep can dramatically increase your options.

You also do not necessarily need to stay in the centre of a popular destination. Accommodation 20 or 30 minutes outside the main tourism area could be more affordable, quieter and available at short notice.

Pack Light and Leave Quickly

The beauty of a spontaneous getaway is that you do not have enough time to overthink it.

You probably do not need three outfit changes a day.

For a short escape, pack the essentials: comfortable clothing, toiletries, medication, chargers, a power bank, comfortable shoes, something warm and one versatile outfit if you plan on having a nice dinner.

Keep the luggage simple enough that packing does not become the reason you leave home three hours later than planned. The faster you can get ready, the sooner the weekend can begin.

Be Strategic About When You Leave

Long-weekend traffic can quickly turn an exciting escape into several frustrating hours on the road.

If you are driving, think carefully about your departure time. Leaving very early in the morning, later in the evening or even travelling a day later than everyone else could make the journey significantly more pleasant.

Before setting off, check your route, fuel up and make sure you understand the road and weather conditions you are likely to encounter.

If you are heading somewhere unfamiliar, download your route or map information before leaving in case you encounter areas with poor mobile reception.

Don't Try to Plan Every Minute

You decided to travel at the last minute, so allow the trip to remain a little spontaneous.

You do not need breakfast reservations, three activities, sightseeing, lunch, sunset drinks and dinner all squeezed into one day.

Choose one or two things you genuinely want to experience and leave space around them. Take the scenic route. Stop when you see an interesting farm stall. Have a long breakfast. Sit somewhere beautiful without checking the time.

Sometimes we return from holidays needing another holiday because we tried to do too much. A long weekend away can simply be about changing your surroundings and slowing down.

You do not need months of planning, an elaborate itinerary or a perfectly curated destination to enjoy a long weekend.

If you can find somewhere comfortable to sleep, work within your budget and remain flexible about where the road takes you, there is still plenty of time to unlock a memorable escape.

Sometimes, you just need enough distance from your normal routine to breathe again.
