I park outside because I don't have a garage. Every winter morning my windscreen is covered in mist or frost and I'm always tempted to pour hot water over it so I can get to work quicker. Is that actually a bad idea?

Pouring hot water onto an icy or very cold windscreen can cause the glass to crack because of the sudden temperature change. That small shortcut could become a very expensive repair.
Instead, start the car and allow the demister to do its job while gently clearing the glass with a proper ice scraper or soft cloth. Make sure both the inside and outside of the windscreen are clear before driving off.
Good visibility is one of the simplest road safety habits, yet it makes an enormous difference, especially during winter mornings when pedestrians, cyclists and other motorists may already be harder to see.
Sometimes the safest solution simply takes an extra two minutes, and those two minutes are almost always worth it.
