Insurance is something most of us only think about when something goes wrong.
Discovery Insure, however, believes that the relationship should begin long before an accident, a burst tyre or even a claim. Last week, the insurer invited a group of journalists to experience what it describes as a customer journey built around three principles: Prevent, Respond and Reward.
The morning began with a presentation on the company's latest sleep research before we climbed into a convoy of mostly Suzuki Fronx SUVs, joined by a handful of LexusRZs, Toyota bZ4Xs and Isuzu D-MAX bakkies, to see how those principles come to life beyond the boardroom.

Looking after the roads we drive on
Our first stop was a quiet residential neighbourhood in Sandton.

Here, Discovery showcased its partnership with the Johannesburg Roads Agency(JRA), where road repair teams were hard at work restoring potholes in a suburban street. It was an everyday setting that made perfect sense. This was the kind of road where a resident could reverse out of the driveway each morning and unknowingly drive into a pothole.
Speaking to the JRA team revealed that repairing a pothole is far more technical than simply filling a hole with asphalt. We also learnt why Johannesburg's roads appear to be deteriorating more rapidly. Ageing infrastructure, increasing traffic volumes and water penetrating damaged road surfaces all contribute to the problem. Even seemingly harmless activities, such as water from informal neighbourhood car washes running across roads, can accelerate deterioration. And while well-meaning residents sometimes try to repair potholes themselves, temporary fixes often create bigger problems if the work isn't done correctly.

It was a reminder that preventing damage often starts long before an insurance claim is ever lodged.
Safer driving starts the night before
The day's focus on prevention had begun earlier that morning. Discovery's latest research explored the relationship between sleep and road safety, finding that drivers with regular sleeping patterns have a 36% lower accident risk, while sufficient sleep duration is associated with a 32% reduction. Even adequate REM sleep, the stage linked to mental recovery and alertness, contributes to safer driving.

The findings reinforce an important point: road safety doesn't begin when you fasten your seatbelt. It begins the night before.
To encourage healthier habits, Discovery has introduced sleep rewards through Vitality Drive, allowing members to earn points for maintaining consistent, good-quality sleep. It's a subtle shift in thinking, recognising that preventing accidents can be just as valuable as responding to them.

When every second counts
Prevention can reduce risk, but it cannot remove it completely. The second half of the day focused on how quickly assistance can reach a customer once an incident has taken place.
We were introduced to Discovery's emergency response ecosystem, including Impact Alert, which uses telematics to detect a serious collision and automatically dispatch assistance if needed. Discovery says it processes more than 5,500 impact alerts annually, with emergency services reaching customers in under five minutes on average.
A demonstration by Discovery's Fire Force team brought that promise to life. Watching firefighters respond to a simulated emergency highlighted the speed and coordination required in those first critical moments. One particularly memorable example showed how crews can, with permission, draw water from a neighbour's swimming pool when it offers the quickest way to contain a fire.

The experience also highlighted Discovery's stolen vehicle recovery service, which combines tracking technology with rapid response teams to improve the chances of recovering a vehicle before it's lost for good.
More than just a policy
By the time we returned to Discovery's Sandton offices, the final pillar, Reward, made more sense. Rather than standing alone as a loyalty programme, it completes the cycle by encouraging behaviours that reduce risk, from driving safely to adopting healthier sleep habits.
Spending a day inside Discovery Insure's customer ecosystem revealed something unexpected. The insurance itself almost became secondary. What stood out instead was an approach focused on solving everyday problems before they become expensive ones, whether that's repairing the road outside your gate, encouraging better sleep before a journey or ensuring help is already on its way when every second counts.
