Hello Mabs
I’m planning to drive to the mountains for a skiing trip and I’m wondering
what the best tyres are for snowy conditions. Should I use snow chains or winter tyres?

Great question! While we’re lucky that most of South Africa doesn’t face heavy snow
often, recent winters have surprised us — remember last year’s snow that caused road closures in KwaZulu-Natal?

When planning a mountain trip, preparation is key. First things first, make sure your
windscreen wipers are in good condition and press firmly against the glass. Use a
winter-grade washer fluid to stop it from freezing. If you struggle to see clearly, rather pull over somewhere safe than risk it.

I wouldn’t be so extreme and get winter tyres in South Africa. But, if you are going to be driving into areas that are prone to heavy snow, like the Drakensberg, you could consider having snow chains for emergencies, especially if you will be driving on steep or gravel roads.
Make sure you know how to fit them before you leave home. No matter what you’re driving on, tyre tread is important. Check that your tyres have enough depth to handle slippery roads. Drive slowly and avoid sudden moves. If the road feels unsafe, find a safe place to stop and wait it out.
Safe travels and enjoy the snow!
