Hi Mabs
I bought a new car four years ago. Over the years of owning it, I have noticed that the fuel consumption has increased significantly despite servicing it at regular intervals and as per the manufacturer’s guidelines. What could be causing this and how can I improve my car’s fuel efficiency?

Mabs Answers:
It can be frustrating when your car suddenly guzzles fuel despite regular services. Even with proper maintenance, fuel consumption can creep up due to factors like tyre pressure, wheel alignment, driving habits, or worn spark plugs and fuel injectors. South African roads, with their stop-start traffic and potholes, can also affect your car’s efficiency over time.
Start by checking your tyre pressure monthly. Underinflated tyres increase drag, and consume more fuel. Avoid aggressive acceleration and excessive idling because these also contribute, and occasionally, clean your engine.
Lastly, my expert friends are advising that you take your car to your mechanic to inspect oxygen sensors and air filters because when they are clogged, they impact the car’s fuel economy. Small changes can make a big difference on the road and your wallet.
