ASK MABS-Mixing Oil Brands: Safe or Risky for Your Engine?

Hello Mabs

When I top up oil at a service station, Do I need to keep using the same brand or Can I top up with a different brand?

Mabs Answers

Great question! I take it your concern is whether mixing different oil brands could harm your engine. While I’m not a technical expert, I consulted industry professionals who assured me that using different brands won’t immediately damage your engine.

However, over time, it could lead to issues. The key factor isn’t the brand but ensuring that the oil meets the same viscosity grade (how thick or thin it is at different temperatures) and the specifications recommended by
your car’s manufacturer. Different brands use unique additive packages, and mixing
them may reduce performance or, in rare cases, cause compatibility issues.

If you’re only topping up a small amount, it’s unlikely to cause immediate harm. But for long-term engine health, it’s best to stick to one brand. Also, if you frequently need to top up, your engine may be consuming oil faster than normal, it isbest to have it checked out!
