Col’ Cacchio is a renowned South African restaurant chain celebrated for its dedication to pizza, pasta, and authentic Italian cuisine. Founded in 1992 by the Terespolsky family, this vibrant eatery was designed to combine a relaxed dining atmosphere with exceptional food quality. The name “Col’ Cacchio” is derived from an Italian expression meaning “with a twist,” which reflects their approach to classic Italian dishes and their ability to infuse local flavours into their offerings.
The first Col’ Cacchio opened in Cape Town and quickly gained popularity, leading to further expansion across South Africa. As the brand developed, it became well-known for its creative pizzas, including iconic options like the “Kamikaze” and “Bunny Chow,” which skillfully blended local ingredients with traditional Italian recipes. This unique fusion has set Col’ Cacchio apart. Over the years, the chain has also introduced a diverse range of vegan and vegetarian options.
Today, Col’ Cacchio operates over 30 locations nationwide, establishing a strong
reputation for its inviting atmosphere. The restaurant chain continually adapts its menu and services to meet the changing tastes of its clientele, ensuring it remains a staple in South Africa’s casual dining scene.
When I’m craving mouth-watering pizza, Col’Cacchio is always my top choice. Today, on World Vegan Day, it’s a joy to celebrate as a new vegan. My journey towards plant-based eating has sometimes been challenging, especially as I adopted this lifestyle to help with my skin issues. I still find myself occasionally craving the indulgent flavours of my past, like the meaty dishes and even Chicken Licken wings with their Soulfire, fiery hot sauce.
Fortunately, Col’ Cacchio often satisfies those cravings with plant-based options that closely resemble hearty dishes. My go-to is the Vegan Margherita, which features a
classic tomato base topped with vegan mozzarella, fresh basil, and a drizzle of olive oil. The taste is incredibly flavorful with every bite-simple yet effective, and light enough to avoid any bloated feeling afterward. The thin, crisp crust is cooked to perfection, making it a truly delightful experience.
After savouring the Vegan Margherita, I often opt for the Ortigiano pizza, priced at R148. This pizza features a delightful combination of ingredients, including mushrooms and fresh herbs, making it a fantastic choice for both vegan and vegetarian diners. I appreciate how Col’ Cacchio frequently introduces exciting limited-time offerings that highlight seasonal ingredients, allowing for a refreshing dining experience. Another standout is the Vegan Mediterranean pizza at R140, boasting a flavourful mix of artichokes, olives, and roasted peppers on a tomato base with vegan cheese; it’s both easy on the palate and wallet.
One of my fondest memories is celebrating my birthday at Col’ Cacchio with friends. We shared an assortment of pizzas, creating a lively atmosphere filled with laughter and joy. The attentive staff surprised me with a complimentary dessert, adding a special touch to the evening that I will always cherish.
Though I’m not a meat eater, I used to indulge in the Carne pizza, priced at R185, which was loaded with Italian sausage, chorizo, onion, chilli, roasted peppers, and
mushrooms. It was hearty, flavourful, and satisfying at the time.
While vegan options may be limited compared to the extensive meat choices available, Col’ Cacchio remains a pioneer in the casual dining scene, ensuring that everyone finds something to enjoy. Their unwavering commitment to quality and innovation keeps me returning for more, as every visit offers a delightful culinary adventure that never disappoints.
