Located in the heart of Waterfall, Johannesburg, MATH is more than just a restaurant—it’s a space for connection, legacy, and the joy of gathering. My visit to the Math Summer Circle, for an exclusive preview of their new summer menu launching on Friday, 22nd November, brought their guiding principle, “When We Gather,” to life. What began as a solo outing soon became a lively evening of shared laughter, stories, and new friendships—a true reflection of MATH’s warm, inclusive spirit.
A Legacy Rooted in Community
MATH is the brainchild of Puleng Mathabatha, who has skilfully woven his family’s history into the restaurant’s story. Inspired by his parents’ hardware store—a beloved community gathering spot—Puleng created MATH as a tribute to connection and heritage. The name, taken from the first four letters of his family surname, honours this legacy. Puleng’s hospitality was the highlight of the evening. Moving from table to table, he shared heartfelt stories about the inspiration behind the dishes and his vision for MATH as a communal hub. His energy and passion set the tone for an unforgettable experience.
Celebrating Summer: The Orange Theme
The evening’s atmosphere was as refreshing as the menu, with orange accents signalling the arrival of summer. From the decor to the vibe, the relaxed and laid-back setting perfectly complemented the vibrant new dishes and drinks on offer.
Cocktails and Mocktails
MATH’s beverage menu is a creative celebration of bold, inventive flavours. Standout drinks included:
Tomato Gimlet: Puleng’s favourite, offering a complex and adventurous twist for
cocktail lovers, though it was a bit too intense for my palate.
White Negroni: A bold, spirit-forward choice for those who appreciate classic drinks with a modern twist.
6:15 in Zanzibar (Mocktail): My personal favourite — a lively, refreshing drink that
captures the essence of summer in a glass.
Cherry Cola: A perfectly balanced delight with a nostalgic twist.
Aperol Spritzer: Bold and bright, perfect for warm-weather sipping, though it was a bit too strong for my taste.
Starters
The meal began with a selection of starters, each offering a unique flavour profile:
Salmon Crudo: The dish had a visually appealing presentation, but the flavours fell short of expectations. While fresh and delicate, it lacked the vibrant seasoning needed to make it memorable.
Wings (BBQ or Peri-Peri): The peri-peri wings stole the show, they were perfectly
cooked and had just the right amount of heat.
The new summer menu is a celebration of fresh, vibrant ingredients. Highlights
included:
Smoked Beef Salad: Tender minute steak paired with baby spinach, roasted butternut, creamy brie, and honey mustard dressing. A perfect blend of lightness and indulgence.
Queen Prawns: Grilled prawns served with garlic-herbed roasted potatoes, butternut, and a luxurious lemon butter sauce—an undeniable crowd-pleaser.
Pekin Chicken: My personal favourite, featuring tender confit chicken atop earthy black rice and rainbow carrots. The nostalgic, fermented sorghum-like flavour of the black rice added depth and intrigue.
Dessert
The evening ended on a high note with the Bourbon Malva Pudding. Warm, rich, and deeply satisfying, it was the perfect conclusion to a memorable meal.
Atmosphere and Final Thoughts
MATH pairs its welcoming atmosphere with exceptional culinary offerings, creating a space where legacy and connection take center stage.
Verdict
MATH is the perfect spot for gatherings with loved ones or solo visits for those seeking new connections. With a thoughtfully curated menu full of flavourful dishes, MATH delivers a dining experience that is as warm and inviting as it is delicious.
