Hyundai has come a long way since it first entered South Africa during the country’s early days of democracy. Back then, it was a newcomer met with curiosity and a bit of scepticism. Fast forward to today, and Hyundai is comfortably one of the top five car brands in the country. The key to its success? Understanding what South Africans want— practical, stylish vehicles that suit busy lives.
One of Hyundai’s latest offerings, the Alcazar, shows just how well the brand has listened. This smart-looking seven-seater is ideal for families needing more space without going over budget. It slots in just below the premium Tucson and is not the only seven-seater in the brand’s lineup. It joins the ultra-luxurious Palisade, which comes fully loaded but carries a steeper price tag at around R1.2 million.

What makes the Alcazar stand out is how it balances comfort, space and modern features in a package that feels a little more upmarket, without breaking the bank. Whether you are tackling the school run or heading off for a weekend away, the Alcazar is built to make those everyday journeys feel a little more special, with enough room for everyone and everything that comes with them.
First Impressions
From the moment we spotted the fleet of Alcazars lined up outside Hyundai’s Johannesburg offices, the car’s styling stood out. With sleek lines, bold lighting that forms a subtle H shape, and a confident grille, it looks modern without being flashy. Inside, the Alcazar feels open and welcoming.
A wide panoramic sunroof floods the cabin with light, and the interior finishes are neat and comfortable. While the seats are not real leather, they are well-made and feel durable, perfect for everyday family life. The front seats adjust electrically, and the layout makes it easy to get settled behind the wheel.

The second row has good legroom, making long trips more enjoyable for passengers, while the third row is best for children or extra guests on shorter drives. Boot space is generous and can handle anything from groceries to luggage or sports bags. Even with the third row in use, you still have flexibility.

Safety and Connectivity
The Alcazar puts family safety first. It comes with six airbags and helpful features that make driving feel more relaxed and secure. Lane keeping assistance helps you stay in your lane, while the electric parking brake with auto hold takes the stress out of stop-start traffic. Stability control, hill start assist and a rear-view monitor all add to the feeling of reassurance behind the wheel.

The model we tested includes a smart key, cruise control for longer trips, and blind spot warning to alert you to vehicles you might not see. With a 200 millimetre ground clearance, the Alcazar handles South African roads with ease, whether you are dodging potholes or venturing off the main road.
Bright daytime running lights keep you visible in all conditions. Inside, staying connected is just as smooth. Apple CarPlay, Android connectivity and Bluetooth are all included, paired with a large screen that is easy to use. Whether you are queuing in traffic or heading off on holiday, your music, maps and messages are always close at hand.

The Drive
Our road trip in the Alcazar took us from busy Bedfordview to the laid-back charm of Cullinan, with a stop at Harry’s Pancakes for a relaxed brunch. The route gave us a bit of everything, from freeway traffic near the airport and open country roads that wound through quiet parts of Gauteng.

The Alcazar handled it all with ease. The diesel engine offered a smooth, confident
drive with enough power when needed. It is not built for speed but rather for a calm, capable journey, exactly what you want for everyday driving or a weekend away.
Hyundai is not chasing the cheapest price tag. Instead, the brand focuses on value, and the Alcazar reflects that. From comfort and safety to thoughtful features, plus a seven- year or 200 000 kilometre warranty, it offers peace of mind to families who want reliability without cutting corners.
As we wrapped up the trip with a sumptuous lunch at Fireroom, my co-driver and I agreed that the Alcazar is a strong all-rounder that is designed with families in mind, ready for school runs, road trips and everything in between. It is easy to imagine it becoming a trusted road trip companion, ready to xplore new places with ease and comfort.
