South African car consumers seem to be catching up to the plug-in hybrids. On the other hand, car manufacturers are also expanding on this attractive engine offering. We all know that motorists in Mzansi are not totally sold on electric vehicles, so plug- in hybrids seem to be a better compromise for most of the EV fence-sitters.
I had the privilege of attending the introduction event of the new OMODA PHEV and its sibling, the JAECOO SHS, both plug-in hybrids. The OMODA and JAECOO brands are solidifying their presence in the South African market. Just a small fact, both these brands are owned by Chery, OMODA being the more luxury brand and JAECOO playing a supporting role.

First Impression
JAECOO has incorporated innovative energy management systems and high-
capacity batteries designed to deliver longer ranges and faster charging times, addressing one of the key concerns for modern drivers.
Driving the J7 SHS offers a refined experience with excellent handling and responsive dynamics. Even during the shorter launch route, the vehicle exhibited agility and stability, showing off its suitability for both city commuting and longer journeys.

The JAECOO J7 SHS is backed by a comprehensive after-sales support package. This includes a five-year/75,000 km service plan, a seven-year/200,000 km warranty, a 10-year/200,000 km warranty for certain electric drive unit components, a 10-year/1 million km engine warranty, and a new industry-leading 10-year/unlimited km power battery pack warranty (for the first owner, reverting to 10 years/200,000 km for subsequent owners. Buyers also receive seven years of roadside assistance

Under the bonnet lies a turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine which, assisted by the electric motor which together makes for a formidable force, resulting in responsive acceleration. Power is pushed to the front wheels through a Dedicated Hybrid Transmission (DHT). The J7 SHS will offer four drive modes: Sport, Eco, and Standard for your convenience, Eco being my preferred mode.

The 18.3 kWh battery provides an all-electric range (AER) of 90 km, while the combined driving range of 1,200+ km enables long distances to be covered without the need to refuel constantly. With a maximum DC charging speed of up to 40 kW, the J7 SHS supports fast charging when used with compatible DC chargers.
The 18.3 kWh Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) battery pack can replenish itself from 30-80% in just 20 minutes, according to the Chinese automaker.

Sharing its bold yet sophisticated styling with the standard J7, the SHS derivative distinguishes itself with model-specific 19-inch alloy wheels and ‘PHEV’ badging on the tailgate. The J7 SHS benefits from LED head- and taillights, as well as a standard panoramic sunroof

Technology
From a technological standpoint, the J7 SHS is packed with advanced features
ranging from intuitive infotainment systems and connectivity options to safety
technologies like adaptive cruise control and lane assist.
Tech-wise, the Chinese cannot be faulted as they offer smart, user-friendly, and safe
vehicles that resonate well with tech-savvy consumers. Other safety features include front/rear parking sensors, a surround-view camera, and front dual, front-side, side curtain, driver knee, and bolster airbags.
