Meet Tebogo Losaba: The Voice Behind Volkswagen Group South Africa

For Tebogo Losaba, Media and Public Relations Manager at Volkswagen Group Africa (VWGA), communication is all about building trust through strong relationships and consistent messaging. Born in Lamontville, KwaZulu-Natal, Tebogo’s entry into VWGA was almost serendipitous—but he’s embraced the role wholeheartedly. In this XploreZA Q&A, he shares insights on his journey, love for the automotive industry, and what it takes to represent an iconic brand.


Tell us about your journey in the automotive industry. What inspired you to enter this space, and how did you break into such a specialised field? 
It was almost serendipitous. I came across the role on LinkedIn and decided to take a chance by applying. But, if I’m being honest, as someone who studied in the Eastern Cape, my passion for the automotive industry and the prospect of working for this iconic brand has always been a driving force.

What does your current role entail, and what are some key challenges and
rewards that come with it? 

As the Brand Product Communications Manager for Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles,
Commercial Vehicles, and Motorsport, my role covers fleet management for both
passenger and commercial fleets, media and stakeholder relations, event coordination, and social media management, to name just a few. I’m responsible for ensuring the brand’s messaging is consistent, impactful, and aligned with our values, while building strong relationships with key stakeholders and boosting Volkswagen’s presence across all platforms.

Many dream of working in the motoring industry, yet it remains competitive and
often male-dominated. Have you faced any challenges, and how did you
overcome them? 

The motoring industry is competitive and male-dominated, and while being a man might seem like an advantage, it comes with its own challenges. Early on, I struggled with self-doubt and felt the pressure to prove myself. I overcame this by focusing on
continuous learning, staying ahead of industry trends, and building a strong network.

Tebogo received the prestigious Marketing Excellence Award at the 2024 Top Gear Awards, on behalf of Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWGA).

Take us back to your first driving experience—what was the first car you ever
drove, and what was it like getting your licence? 

Growing up, some of my fondest memories are tied to my grandmother’s 1982 Opel
Rekord 2.0 L Automatic – the first car I ever drove. I can still vividly recall the distinct
rumble of its engine when it started; what a time! Getting my driver’s licence was a
journey of perseverance. I failed my first attempt, which was tough, but I didn’t give up. Passing on my second try was unforgettable, it taught me to keep pushing forward, no matter the setback. This taught me resilience and inspired me to never give up on my dreams, no matter how challenging the road may seem.

Tebogo’s journey began with his grandmother’s 1982 Opel Rekord, where he first felt the thrill of driving.

With the automotive landscape changing rapidly, particularly with the rise of
electric vehicles and digital integration, how has your brand adapted to these
shifts? 

Volkswagen has embraced the rapid changes in the automotive landscape by prioritising innovation, sustainability and digital transformation. We’ve launched the ID. family of electric vehicles, built on our advanced MEB platform, leading the shift towards zero-emission mobility. We’re also investing in next-gen battery technology and expanding charging infrastructure to make EVs more accessible. Digitally, we’ve integrated features like voice control, augmented reality displays and seamless connectivity. Our focus on autonomous driving and smart mobility solutions positions us at the forefront of the industry. By combining sustainability with advanced technology, Volkswagen isn’t just adapting to change, we’re driving it.
