Mitsubishi Destinator signals a confident return to the family SUV space

By Lethabo Temogo

Mitsubishi Motors South Africa unveiled its all-new Destinator at Casalinga restaurant, where a line-up of SUVs set the tone for what felt less like a launch and more like a reset. The message was clear. Mitsubishi is ready to be seen again.

During the presentation, Managing Director Bruce Mukhola described the brand as the “forgotten child”, a rare moment of honesty that captured both its recent struggles and its renewed ambition.

The Destinator is not just a new model. It is Mitsubishi’s way back into the conversation.

A shift in strategy

The Destinator marks a deliberate shift in Mitsubishi’s SUV approach, especially for emerging markets like South Africa.

Built with regions such as South Africa, South Asia and Latin America in mind, the focus is clear: space, practicality and everyday usability. This is where the modern family lives, and Mitsubishi is positioning the Destinator squarely in that reality.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with a smooth automatic transmission. While it remains a two-wheel drive, five selectable driving modes, namely Normal, Wet, Gravel, Tarmac and Mud, give it enough versatility for varied local conditions. It may not be trying to be everything, but it understands exactly what it needs to be.

Comfort meets everyday function

Step inside, and the Destinator leans into a more refined, lifestyle-led experience. A 12.3-inch infotainment display and 8-inch digital driver cluster form the centre of a connected cabin, supported by an 8-speaker Yamaha sound system. It feels modern without trying too hard.

There is a clear focus on comfort. A panoramic sunroof opens up the cabin, while features like the Nanie X air purification system and a cooled centre console add subtle but meaningful touches for daily use.

Practicality remains central. Storage is generous, the cabin is spacious, and everything feels designed around how families actually use their cars.Connectivity comes through My Mitsubishi Connect, allowing drivers to monitor fuel levels, locate the vehicle and even activate the air conditioning remotely.

Safety you can trust

Mitsubishi has not overlooked safety. The Destinator comes equipped with Mitsubishi Motors Safety Sensing, including forward collision mitigation, blind spot warning, rear cross traffic alert and a 360-degree camera. With 214mm of ground clearance, it also feels ready for more than just urban driving, giving it confidence across mixed terrain.

On the road

Behind the wheel, the Destinator delivers a composed and comfortable drive. Power from the turbocharged engine comes through smoothly, building pace without feeling strained. It is not aggressive, but it is responsive enough when needed. What stands out is how settled it feels. Whether on tar or rougher surfaces, the vehicle remains stable, with driving modes adjusting seamlessly without interrupting the experience. It is easy to imagine this as a daily companion that does not demand too much from the driver.

Built for real life

At its core, the Destinator understands its audience. It is aimed at families, road trip enthusiasts and anyone who values space, comfort and ease of use. During the launch, Mukhola pointed out that the boot comfortably fits a full golf bag and kit, a small but telling detail that speaks to its practicality. This is not a car trying to impress in a showroom. It is one designed to work in everyday life.

Final thoughts

The Destinator represents a turning point for Mitsubishi in South Africa. It brings together comfort, practicality and just enough performance to meet the needs of modern families, without overcomplicating the formula.

In a market filled with increasingly aggressive competitors like the Chery Tiggo 7, the Destinator takes a quieter approach. It focuses on usability, refinement and consistency. And sometimes, that is exactly what the market is looking for.

Pricing and availability

The Destinator is competitively priced, starting at R489 990 for the GLS, with the range- topping Exceed priced at R569 990.

It enters a crowded segment, but one where it finally feels like Mitsubishi is ready to compete again.
