Pont de Val: A French Countryside Escape on the Vaal

By Prashirwin Naidu

Hungry and eager for some flavour, I arrived at Pont de Val in the brand-new Chery Tiggo 9, what I like to call the “spaceship on wheels”, fresh from its launch. The drive was thrilling, but this stop was all about food – and few places deliver like Pont de Val.

From spaceship to French countryside The new Chery Tiggo 9 brought me to Pont de Val, where the real journey began — with flavours worth every mile.

Set on the banks of the Vaal River, Pont de Val feels like a slice of the French
countryside. With its elegant architecture and lush gardens, it draws you in from the moment you arrive. The setting slows you down, and the food makes you want every bite to last just a little longer. Established in 2010, the estate was designed to bring European charm to the Vaal. Today, it is home to vineyards, a boutique hotel, wedding venues, and one of the region’s most sought-after riverside dining experiences.

Often described as the “French countryside on the Vaal,” it blends fine dining with South African hospitality, creating a destination that draws couples, families, and travellers alike. Over the years, it has become synonymous with romance, relaxation, and refined food – a true gem outside Johannesburg.

French countryside feels, right on the Vaal. Pont de Val is where romance, riverside dining, and timeless charm meet, just an hour from Joburg.

Upon arrival, my hunger was calling for something with substance that could awaken the palate. The answer came as a seafood starter – tender calamari, perfectly sauced, tangy yet savoury, and undeniably satisfying. Each bite was meaty, juicy, and packed with explosive flavours. It set the tone beautifully, making me eager for what was to follow.

A starter that steals the show. Tender calamari, sauced to perfection — tangy, savoury, and bursting with flavour. The perfect beginning at Pont de Val.

As starters are meant to do, they teased rather than filled. For the main course, while my colleagues tucked into hearty steak and juicy chicken cuts, I veered off into vegetarian territory. I wanted something light, healthy, and comforting. What arrived was a bean curry enriched with thick, flavourful gravy and accompanied by tofu. It wasn’t loud on the plate – it looked modest compared to the meaty spreads across the table –but it carried a quiet sophistication. I couldn’t help but think of it as “a bean’s curry that went to private school.” It nourished me without overwhelming me and was exactly what I needed.

This bean curry with tofu may have looked modest next to the steaks and chicken, but it delivered refined comfort — wholesome, flavourful, and just what I needed.

And then, dessert. The undisputed star of the meal: cheesecake. Creamy, decadent, yet surprisingly light, it arrived with a dollop of fresh cream that elevated the experience further. Each bite reminded me of why dessert is often called the grand finale—it tied everything together with a sweetness that lingered long after. It was among the best cheesecakes I’ve had in a long time.

Creamy, decadent, yet light — this cheesecake was pure bliss, leaving a sweetness that lingered long after the last bite. A true Pont de Val masterpiece.

Pont de Val is far more than a restaurant and dining here is more than a meal; it’s an experience that blends atmosphere, flavour, and history. It delivers on every front, from the riverside setting to the thoughtfully prepared dishes. Whether you’re out for a romantic escape, a celebratory meal, or a leisurely drive with someone special, Pont de Val proves that great destinations don’t always require a passport. Sometimes, they’re waiting just by the river.
