Some places leave a lasting impression, Rooiberg Lodge in the Klein Karoo is one such treasure. Before setting foot as part of the Jeep Wrangler launch earlier this month, I had never heard of the klein dorpie of Ladismith. When we descended to the valley before sunset with the dust of clouds caused by a convoy of enthusiastic Jeep Wranglers, the discovery was breathtaking. Nestled off the beaten track in Vanwyksdorp, Rooiberg Lodge is not a lap of luxury and it will unlikely feature in glossy tourism brochures. Yet this four-star lodge offers authentic charm and exceptional hospitality, making it a destination worth returning to.
Getting There:
Reaching Rooiberg Lodge is an adventure. Our group arrived via a scenic, challenging 4×4 route through Rooiberg Pass. While more accessible routes exist, none are tarred. Nevertheless, vehicles like an Audi A4 and a Mercedes C-Class have successfully made the journey. The reward? A serene valley framed by mountains, dotted with tranquil bodies of water, and picturesque buildings that seem plucked from a painting. Free-roaming wildlife, including zebras, giraffes, and springboks, add to the natural splendour of this 6 500-hectare property, which also features an olive estate.

Warm Hospitality:
The hospitality at Rooiberg Lodge is genuine and heartfelt. Staff interactions feel natural and respectful, creating a warm, family-like atmosphere that immediately puts guests at ease. Service is thoughtful, staff remember your drinks preferences and are attentive without being intrusive.

Accommodation:
Rooiberg Lodge offers diverse accommodations ranging from spacious manor houses, self-catering villas, chalets, loft rooms and campsites. Our loft rooms, though modern and somewhat out of sync with the rustic surroundings, were comfortable. Each room featured a king-size bed, ceiling fan, bar fridge, and a functional bathroom with a walk-in shower and concrete countertops doubling as a desk. Note: digital connectivity is limited. Wi-Fi is unstable, mobile signal is sparse and there are no TVs. This digital detox encourages real-world connections and relaxation.

Food and Drink:
Dining at Rooiberg Lodge is a celebration of Klein Karoo flavours. Our evening began with sunset drinks and snacks, including local olives, oils, cheeses and flavourful roosterkoeks. Dinner showcased South African staples, with a braai as the main event and malva pudding for dessert, delicious and unpretentious. Breakfast the next morning featured hearty farmhouse options, enjoyed against the
backdrop of sweeping views.

Activities:
Nature drives at sunrise and sunset allow guests to xplore the property’s rich
biodiversity. For longer stays, the lodge offers olive tours, birdwatching, and hiking or biking trails. Nearby attractions include art galleries, wine farms in Calitzdorp, and
ostrich safaris in Oudtshoorn for the adventurous.

Final Impressions:
Rooiberg Lodge’s allure lies in its simplicity, authenticity and exceptional hospitality. The lodge doesn’t rely on extravagance; instead, it offers genuine experiences in a
breathtaking setting. As I bid farewell, one phrase resonated was ‘I’ll be back’ – in the famous words of one Arnold Schwarzenegger.
