A palace away from home – that’s precisely how I’d describe my escape to the Radisson Safari Hotel, one of South Africa’s most exciting new hospitality gems. The visit coincided with the launch of the new Volkswagen Transporter, a mighty and impressive piece of German engineering that now carries a touch of Ford DNA through their partnership. (Keep an eye out for my full motoring review on Monday) However, let’s first discuss the stay itself. This rejuvenating retreat took me far from the noise of city life and deep into the tranquil embrace of the Lowveld, where bushveld serenity meets five- star sophistication.

Accommodation
Nestled within the lush wilderness near Hoedspruit, the Radisson Safari Hotel, Kruger Park, opened its doors in 2023 and has quickly become a magnet for travellers seeking both luxury and adventure. It’s part of the Radisson Hotel Group’s ongoing expansion into Africa, and the property marks the brand’s first safari-themed resort in South Africa.

Just a short drive from Kruger National Park, the hotel is situated on a sprawling reserve teeming with indigenous flora, birdlife, and breathtaking views of the Drakensberg Mountains. The area has long been known as the gateway to the Kruger, and it’s steeped in history — from early trading routes and wildlife conservation efforts to its role as a key stopover for xplorers heading deeper into the bush. With this backdrop, Radisson’s modern take on safari hospitality feels both fitting and refreshing.

The moment you set foot into the property, the attention to detail is apparent. Everything feels expansive — from the grand reception area to the open-air decks and multiple swimming pools that ripple under the sun. The architecture seamlessly blends earthy tones with sleek modernity. My room, with its minimalist light-wood finishes and soothing white palette, exuded a calm atmosphere. The balcony, designed for two, opened to sweeping views of the surrounding bushveld — a daily reminder of where you are: in the heart of nature, wrapped in comfort.

At roughly R3 000 a night, it’s certainly a splurge, but one that delivers value through both design and experience. Everything, from the crisp linen to the quiet hum of the air conditioning, spoke of understated luxury.
Dining
If there’s one thing that truly stood out, it was the food. Dining here feels like a journey in itself. Breakfast offered a hearty selection — though I did wish for a bit more variety and less oil in some dishes. Still, the buffet had its winners: creamy scrambled eggs, sautéed veggies, rye toast, and an abundance of fresh fruit that served as the perfect palate cleanser.

Divine Foods, Graskop
Lunch took us offsite to Divine Foods at The View in nearby Graskop, a charming mountain town known for its waterfalls, scenic drives, and the iconic God’s Window. The meal was underwhelming overall, but an apple crumble pie (and the breathtaking blue skies) saved the day.

Dinner back at the hotel, however, was pure bliss. The buffet spread was nothing short of decadent — roasted lamb, grilled chicken, fresh salads, creamy mash, and chakalaka bursting with flavour. Dessert sealed the deal: tiramisu, chocolate éclairs, and warm malva pudding with custard — a sweet symphony that ended the night perfectly.

Amenities
Beyond the dining rooms and lounges, the Radisson Safari Hotel also delivers on wellness. The gym is beautifully designed — modern, airy, and equipped with everything you need for a satisfying workout. Afterwards, the sauna provided the perfect wind-down moment, a true chef’s kiss of relaxation.
For those staying longer, the property offers safari excursions, sunset game drives, and family- friendly activities that make it more than just a hotel – it’s these exceptional experiences that truly set it apart.

The Radisson Safari Hotel managed to impress, relax, and inspire. It’s a destination that bridges the gap between wild adventure and urban comfort, giving guests the best of both worlds. With its exceptional service, beautiful setting, and top-notch amenities, it’s easy to see why this new addition to the Lowveld has captured the hearts of travellers.
Would I return? Absolutely. Because some escapes are meant to be revisited — and this one, without question, is a palace I’d gladly call home again.
