Amarok is all set to launch soon. The new Amarok is manufactured in South Africa. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles is launching globally in parallel with the continuous increase in daily unit numbers. It will begin in a few countries before the end of the year. The majority of markets will follow in 2023. The new pick-up will then be available to order in almost every country relevant to this model by next summer.
Multi-tool for professionals:
The new Amarok masters every conceivable work and leisure task thanks to a payload of up to 1.19 tonnes, 3.5-tonne towing capacity, and an even better thought-out cargo box. The charismatically designed second-generation Amarok, with its new drive, assist, and control systems, the typical robustness of a pick-up, and its very flexibly usable cargo box are ideal as an ultra-modern multi-tool for professionals.
All-wheel drive and two top versions:
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles designed the new Amarok to go wherever it is needed. As a result, in Europe and many other parts of the world, all-wheel drive is standard rather than just rear-wheel drive. The drive system power required for work and non-work tasks is provided by up to five efficient four- and six-cylinder turbo engines. The new Amarok is also available in five different equipment configurations. They are the ‘Amarok,’ ‘Life,’ and ‘Style’ lines, as well as the ‘PanAmericana’ (off-road styling) and ‘Aventura top versions (exclusive styling). The new Amarok is available as a four-door pick-up with a double cab (DoubleCab) and a two-door version with a single cab (DoubleCab) for markets outside of Europe (SingleCab).
Increased length and space:
The new Amarok is 96 mm longer than its predecessor, measuring 5,350 mm. A wheelbase of 3,270 mm represents a 173 mm increase. This allows for more space in the double cab. The wheelbase has grown disproportionately longer, resulting in shorter body overhangs. As a result, the Amarok DoubleCab’s ramp angles have been increased to 30 degrees at the front and 26 degrees at the rear, resulting in crisper proportions and improved off-road capability.
Four- and six-cylinder engines:
Depending on the market, the new generation Amarok1/2 is powered by up to four turbo diesel engines (TDI with four or six cylinders) and a turbocharged petrol engine (TSI with four cylinders). Efficiency and high torque levels are characteristics shared by all five engines. In African markets, for example, the base engine specification is a TDI delivering 110 kW (150 PS)1. In terms of power, the next engine for many markets around the world, including Europe, is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder TDI with 125 kW. (170 PS) 2. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles offers a four-cylinder engine with a bi-turbocharger at the third TDI power output level, producing 151 kW in Europe (205 PS) 2. A V6 engine with 177 kW will be available as the new top TDI (240 PS) 2. In countries such as Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, the two more powerful TDI engines can produce up to 155 kW (210 PS) / 184 kW. (250 PS) 1. A four-cylinder TSI with 222 kW (302 PS)1 is available for markets where petrol engines predominate in the pick-up sector.
New 10-speed automatic transmission:
The 110 kW Amarok is available with a 5-speed manual transmission and rear-wheel drive. The TDI engines with outputs of 125 kW and 151 kW will be standard in Europe and several other countries. A 6-speed automatic transmission is also available as an option for the 125 kW TDI in some markets. The 2.0-litre TDI with 151 kW output can be ordered with a new 10-speed automatic transmission as an option. The 10-speed automatic transmission is standard on the 155 kW TDI, V6 TDI, and turbo petrol engines.
3.5-tonne towing capacity:
In Europe, all Amarok automatic transmission models are permitted to tow trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes. Outside of Europe, the maximum towing load, including manual transmission versions, is 3.5 tonnes. In comparison to its predecessor, the permissible total weight of vehicles and trailers has increased worldwide from 6.0 to 6.5 tonnes. The maximum payload of the double-cab pick-up has increased to 1.19 tonnes.
Two all-wheel drive systems:
The Amarok comes standard with all-wheel drive (4MOTION) in Europe and many other countries. Two different 4MOTION systems are used here, depending on the engine version: one selectable all-wheel drive with three drive modes and a top version with four drive modes. The top version includes a variable and thus automatic power distribution between the front and rear axles via a multi-plate clutch as an additional fourth mode (4A). The all-wheel-drive system is rounded out by an optional differential lock and intelligent ‘Drive Modes.’
Over 20 new assistance systems:
Depending on the model, up to 25 assistance systems make driving easier and, in some cases, safer. Over 20 of these systems are now on the second generation Amarok, including an automatic cruise control system (‘intelligent speed control assistant,’ a parking assistant for assisted manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces, a 360-degree all-round view (‘Area View,’ a lane change assistant, and the road sign recognition system.
Strong, sovereign front section:
The pick-body up now has a powerful appearance. “We have significantly modified the Amarok’s archetypal design for the new generation.” “It is now unmistakably more expressive and even more impressive,” says Albert Kirzinger, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles’ Head of Design. The new, charismatic front section is a stand-alone statement. The straight and very upright bonnet with unmistakable Volkswagen DNA is especially striking.
Unmistakable light design:
The same can be said for the horizontal bars running across the radiator grille with the neatly integrated LED headlights that come standard on all models. The ‘IQ.LIGHT – LED headlights’ used on the Amarok PanAmericana and Aventura, as well as in some countries on the Amarok Style, are new to this product line. They provide interactive carriageway lighting and a distinct light design. The radiator grille unit merges into a further horizontal level of the front section depending on the version, or – in the case of the PanAmericana and Aventura – into an X-shaped design. The word “Amarok” is embossed above the number plate holder on both top models. LED fog lights to the left and right of it (included as standard on the Life and above).
Silhouette and rear end with unmistakable DNA:
The half-round wheel arches on the side are a typical Amarok design feature. Unlike many other pick-ups, the upper termination of the wheel arches here forms a nearly straight line rather than a circular one. The wings above the up to 21-inch alloy wheels are also distinctive, and the wheel arches are clad in tough plastic. The rear section also reveals the vehicle’s DNA: the word ‘Amarok’ is embossed across almost the entire width of the tailgate beneath the VW badge. The tail lights, which reach far into the silhouette, form the outer frame of the rear section. The top PanAmericana and Aventura models have a C-shaped design and LED lighting as standard.
Interior:
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles designed the interior with practical controls and high-quality digital screens. The look and feel of the materials resemble those of premium SUVs like the Volkswagen Touareg. The instrument panel’s layout is clear, well-structured, and ergonomically tailored to the driver. On the base version, there is an 8.0-inch Digital Cockpit (on the Style and above, it is fully digital and 12.3-inch) and a portrait format touchscreen for the infotainment system (10.1-inch, Style and above, 12.0-inch). In addition, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has achieved an intuitively usable mix of digital functions and ergonomically designed buttons and rotary switches in the new Amarok. A rotary switch, for example, is used to adjust the volume of the infotainment system’s speakers. The all-wheel drive, primary parking functions, air conditioning, assist systems, and driving modes are all controlled by buttons. Depending on the equipment line, these tough switches have chrome-look rims.
Exclusive Harman Kardon sound system and leather seats:
The Amarok PanAmericana and Amarok Aventura come with a 640-watt Harman Kardon sound system as standard equipment. Likewise included as standard in the Amarok PanAmericana and Aventura: a high-quality leather-look instrument panel with elegant contrast stitching. As part of its premium positioning, the Amarok’s front-seat passenger and driver sit on ergonomically designed seats, which are electrically adjustable into 10 positions in the higher specifications. The rear of the DoubleCab also offers plenty of space and comfort for three adult passengers. Amarok PanAmericana and Aventura use leather trim that is both elegant and hard-wearing, while Style is covered with ‘ArtVelours’ microfleece.
Large cargo box and payload of up to 1.19 tonnes:
The cargo box behind the double or single cab is also impressively spacious. The cargo bed between the wheel arches, like on the predecessor model, has 1,227 mm of space for a Euro pallet loaded sideways or lengthways. With the tailgate closed, the cargo box measures 1,624 mm for the DoubleCab and 2,332 mm for the SingleCab. As a result, the SingleCab version can take two Euro pallets sideways. The load is held in place by strong lashing rings on the cargo bed and side walls. The maximum height of the tail lift has also increased by up to 21 mm, depending on specification, to now 529 mm.
Accessory range satisfies every wish:
The static roof load capacity has increased to 350 kilogrammes, which is sufficient for a roof tent, for example. A variety of features will be available, including alloy wheels up to 21 inches in diameter, all-terrain tyres (up to 18 inches), and trailer mounts. A bike holder, a multi-functional carrier system, different roll covers, different designs of the styling bar, and a sports bar will also be available for the cargo box (the latter exclusively for the Amarok Aventura). A hardtop will once again be available for the cargo bed, effectively transforming the pick-up into an SUV with a van-like load capacity.
The local Amarok range specifications as well as the pricing will be announced in the first quarter of 2023.
