The recent arrival of the GWM Tank 300 brought immense excitement to our streets. Previously, this level of excitement was typically reserved for German, English, or American brands, but times have changed! Like someone under the spotlight effect, the Tank 300 entered a room and captivated everyone’s attention while exuding confidence. Despite some nitpicking, it remained steadfast, showcasing its best features. During my week-long rendezvous with the Tank 300, I discovered something new each day and found myself falling in love with it.
The exterior design
The rugged-looking SUV has an imposing presence and appears ready for action. At first sight, I sensed an adventure awaiting me. It reminded me of the American brand known for its adventurous spirit. However, my adventure with it was limited to some city driving and a trip to the mall. Nonetheless, it looked stunning in bold red.
The interior design
Getting inside the vehicle was a bit of a challenge owing to its height, but I was pleasantly surprised by the luxurious interior. The leather seats looked plush and comfortable, and the layout was well-designed, with the 12.3-inch touchscreen as a focal point.
The sunroof flooded the interior with light, creating a bright atmosphere. Connecting my phone was quick and easy, although I found myself switching between Joburg’s number radio station and that youth radio station. The crisp sound from the Harman Kardon audio system made even amapiano songs enjoyable for someone on the wrong side of 40.
Driving
Driving this SUV out of the driveway was an incredibly surprising experience. Despite its imposing appearance, the eerie silence from the electric battery, rather than the expected diesel engine noise, caught everyone off guard, including myself – despite knowing it was a hybrid. Its nimbleness and performance, akin to a Polo, impressed me the most. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel like I was driving a “truck,”. After a week with this SUV, I was completely smitten and, dare I say, converted. I must say, I was sad to see it go while there was so much more to discover. It was bittersweet to say goodbye to it when there was still so much to xplore.
