Discover Fun and A Unique Cake Decorating Experience at Leona’s Cakery

By Gugulethu Tshabalala

Tucked away in the suburb of Maroelana, Pretoria, Leona’s Cakery is not just a bakery for special occasion cakes and sweet treats, it is a vibrant, hands-on experience where creativity takes centre stage. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, hosting a fun day out with friends, or simply looking for something different to do with the family, this cosy spot invites you to get stuck with frosting, sprinkles and plenty of laughter. From the moment you step inside, the warm and inviting atmosphere sets the tone for a joyful, shared experience that is as memorable as it is delicious.

Looking for something different and a little creative than our usual lunch date, my two friends and I swapped our café catch-up for an afternoon of cake decorating. Each of us were given a 12 cm vanilla cake, filled with a generous swirl of caramel treat that added just the right hint of sweetness. We were handed four vibrant shades of buttercream and with creative juices flowing, we got stuck in. The smooth texture made the decorating process enjoyable.

Trading lattes for piping bags. An afternoon of laughter, buttercream, and our best (and messiest) cake decorating skills!

Embracing the Halloween spirit in March, I went bold with green and black buttercream – and ended up with a colourful mess that was not quite elegant, but full of charm. My friends played it safe with soft, dreamy palettes and created cakes almost too pretty to eat. Between the frosting, laughter and friendly teasing, it was the kind of fun you do not forget.

A tale of two styles: spooky chic meets pastel perfection, from bold blunders to buttercream bliss, every swirl told a story – and every bite was worth it.

At just R220 per person, it is a budget-friendly way to spend an afternoon decorating, laughing and enjoying cake. Sessions run for two to three hours, giving you plenty of time to decorate, unwind and enjoy good company. The space fits up to 30 guests, with cosy corners for private groups. It is neat and fuss-free, no aprons are needed. With no pressure to be perfect, it is all about having fun and getting creative. While light meals and drinks are available, the decorating stations are a little snug, so it is best to tuck in after the class.

Cake, creativity, and good company – all for just R220!

Whether you bake every weekend or have never held a piping bag, Leona’s Cakery is a feel-good space to try something new. It is all about creativity, connection and cake — an experience you will want to share again and again. Be sure to book online; walk-ins are not allowed, so your spot is prepared and waiting.
For us, it was a playful, hands-on way to bond and far more memorable than the usual lunch outing.

From first-timers to frosting pros, Leona’s Cakery is where creativity, connection, and cake come together
