Asara Hotel Wine Estate – A Stay with Layers of Charm

By Prashirwin Naidu

In the world of motoring, we are spoilt for choice. With so many incredible destinations and driving experiences, it is easy to become a little picky. But now and then, a combination of great launch and a hotel comes along that reminds you why you fell in love with this industry in the first place. Our recent trip to the Cape Winelands to launch the new Haval H6 was just that. We checked into the beautiful Asara Hotel and Wine Estate in Stellenbosch for an overnight stay that blended luxury with breathtaking views, setting the perfect tone for the adventure ahead.

A dreamy launch in the Cape Winelands, with the Haval H6 and a luxurious overnight stay at Asara Hotel & Wine Estate setting the perfect scene

Background
Asara Hotel and Wine Estate offers more than just stunning views and good wine. It is a place to breathe, relax and take in the beauty of the Cape Winelands. With roots that stretch back to 1691 when it was still known as Verdun farm, Asara’s name is inspired by ancient nature deities representing earth, sun and sky — a fitting tribute to the estate’s connection with nature.

Asara Hotel & Wine Estate is more than a scenic escape, it’s a place to pause, breathe, and soak in the soul of the Cape Winelands.

The Rahmann family took over in 2001 and by 2008 had opened the hotel that now stands as a beacon of luxury, which joined the exclusive Relais and Châteaux collection a year later. Today, Asara is celebrated for its award-winning wines, graceful surroundings and the peaceful charm that stays with you long after you leave.

Ambience
It felt like I’d stepped into a winter wonderland- clean, peaceful, and cloaked in a cosy charm. Stellenbosch evenings can get chilly, and this was no exception. But the warmth of the estate’s wooden finishes and quiet ambience made up for the bite in the air.

A winter wonderland in Stellenbosch, crisp air, cosy charm, and the warm embrace of Asara’s wooden finishes made it an unforgettable escape.

Accommodation
My room was warm and cosy, stirring the soul just the right way. Classical music
greeted me as I stepped in, adding a lovely touch. A complimentary bottle of Asara wine sat waiting on the table, a gesture I appreciated, even though I’m a teetotaller. I decided to take it home for my mother to enjoy with our friendly oxtail tradition. But what truly won me over was the bed, which is massive, plush, and deeply comfortable. Sleep came easily that night.

Warm room, soft music, and the comfiest bed. Asara nailed the perfect night’s rest.

The bathroom was neat and straightforward. I found myself wishing for a bathtub, as that always seals the deal, but a brisk hot shower did the trick just fine.

No tub, but a brisk hot shower in a neat bathroom did the trick.

Dinning
Dinner was a mini-adventure of its own. An array of small plates arrived, starting with a crumbed tuna ball paired with tangy aubergine (brinjal). Unexpected and delightful. Then came deep-fried calamari and squid-crispy, light, and well-seasoned.

Crumbed tuna with tangy brinjal to perfectly crisp calamari and squid.

For the main course, I went with something vegetarian: mushrooms in a rich tomato sauce, served with tender baby broccoli. It wasn’t mind-blowing, but it was satisfying and homey-something I might try to recreate myself. It needs more spunk, dare I say, or spice.

A comforting vegetarian dish: mushrooms in tomato sauce with baby broccoli.

Dessert was the cherry on top: a sorbet paired with a jelly-style treat, which packed a vibrant mix of flavours and textures. I savoured every spoonful. Full and happy, I wandered back to my room. The bed was just as inviting, and sleep was deep and undisturbed. I woke up already looking forward to breakfast.

Dessert was a burst of flavour sorbet and jelly in perfect harmony.

Breakfast was generous and well-presented. Baked goodies, croissants, Danish pastries, eggs, bacon, and sausages were all on offer, though I kept things light. I opted for a fresh salad, plenty of fruit, and several helpings of salmon, which has become a bit of a go-to for me lately. It was tasty and nourishing.

My stay at Asara Wine Estate was joyful, even for a night. It’s where you want to
linger longer, perhaps with a book in one hand and a vineyard view.
