Hello Mabs
I pay car insurance every month, but I honestly don’t understand my policy. Excess, cover types, add-ons, it all feels like another language. What should I really be paying attention to so I’m properly covered and not overpaying?

You’re not alone; most people pay for insurance without fully understanding it. The key things to check are your excess, what’s actually covered, and what isn’t. A low premium often comes with a high excess, which hurts when you need to claim. Also check whether you’re comprehensively insured or just covered for third party. In South Africa, extras like hail cover, tyre and rim, and car hire can be lifesavers, especially in summer.
Don’t be shy to ask your broker or insurer to explain your policy in plain language. You’re paying for peace of mind; make sure it truly delivers when you need it.
