If you call me Suzi I will respond…

There are quite a number of factors to consider when buying a car for the very first time. If I am completely honest with you, I wish I had considered a lot of things on my first buy. The entry level car market has evolved since then; there are now plenty of options and most importantly a huge improvement in this segment.

I have been spending a reasonable amount of time with the Japanese car maker Suzuki and I must say, this brand has surprised me in a very pleasant way. This week was the Suzuki Baleno’s turn in the test schedule, available in the GL and GLX models. The Suzuki Baleno is not only a cutie but it is also fuel efficient Queen (I choose to believe that my test was a girl). The young lady averaged a reasonable 5.3L per 100km which is not too farfetched from the acclaimed 5.1L per 100km. In these tough economic times, fuel consumption has to be number one on the list of factors we talked bout earlier. More on the looks, the Baleno has a striking front, from the headlights that offer a new three-dimensional design, to the elegant and non-aggressive grille. The rear is not my favourite part of the car, although I imagine it would look much better as a sedan.

The five-speed manual gearbox is fit for the city life, the dramatic morning traffic and I imagine long distance drives. Changing gears has never been this smooth and effortless I tell ya! As far as entry level cars are concerned, these aren’t built for Dominic Toretto and they tend to be a little draggy don’t they? Not this one, the 1.4-litre engine delivering 68kW with 130Nm of torque is okay. I have other things that made me more excited about this this car.

The reverse camera for example, a clear picture on the 7’’ infotainment system is absolutely useful. But that’s not all the touchscreen provides, the GLX has smartphone integration; Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There is also Bluetooth, easy connections and access of some of these from the multifunctional steering wheel; we didn’t have this back in my day. Speaking of the interior, the spaciousness and comfort also need to be duly noted.

The safety features now include front side and side curtain airbags for a total of six airbags on the GLX specification. The Baleno is also equipped with ISOFIX mounting points for child seats and ABS brakes with electronic brake-force distribution (EBD) and emergency brake assistance (BAS).

My Favourite Baleno is definitely the GLX specification; it’s got a lot more to offer at reasonable pricing. Baleno consumers will also be spoilt for choice in a number of colours and upgraded upholstery.
