ASK MABS: Buying a car at an auction

Hi Mabs

I’m in the market for a good used car. I have a decent deposit and have already been pre-approved for financing. However, the cars I’m interested in are quite expensive, even as used. I’ve been advised to check out auctions, but I’m new to this and nervous about their terms and conditions. Can you break down what buying from an auction entails and what I should specifically look for in the car I decide to buy?

Auctions are a great way to buy good cars for less compared to dealerships. However, there are important points to consider before rushing to an auction and bidding.

Auction houses release the cars that will be up for auction ahead of the auction date, giving potential bidders a chance to view them. Note that you won’t be able to test drive the cars or get their full history as you would at a dealership. However, take the time to inspect the cars to ensure you’re satisfied. Remember, cars sold at auction are sold as they are, including their defects or ‘voetstoots’, with no refunds once your bid is accepted.

Also bear in mind that you will be bidding against others who want the same car. Stick to your budget and don’t let emotions take over. If you are outbid, be prepared to walk away and try again another time. Good luck with your search.
