ASK MABS: Fuel For Thought – How to Avoid a Road Trip Disaster

Hello Mabs

How do I make sure I’m getting the right fuel at a petrol station on a road trip?I have heard stories of drivers who accidentally get the wrong fuel in their cars and result in untold damage.

Mabs Answers:

Always double-check before the attendant fills up. Mixing petrol and diesel can seriously damage your engine and ruin your holiday. Confirm fuel type verbally and point to the sticker on your fuel flap, especially when you’re tired or at busy rest stops. If you suspect the wrong fuel is going in, stop the pump immediately and don’t start the car. Also watch the attendant reset the pump to zero to avoid paying for someone else’s fuel. A little attention goes a long way when you’re far from home.
