Hi Mabs
I drive a GR Yaris and love seeing German car drivers’ faces when I take off at robots. However, the1,6 litre turbo petrol engine is very thirsty and it is affecting my pocket. With petrol set to go up again next year, I fear I will be forced to park my car at home and take the bus to work. Do you have tips on how to make petrol go a long way?

I am just as frustrated with the constant petrol hikes because their impact is far-reaching. However, I understand that sometimes it cannot be avoided as there are global influences.
There are ways in which you can make the fuel inside your tank go a long way. Much as I love the GR Yaris, how you drive it determines how much fuel you burn. Some humility at traffic lights might be a good starting point.
Drive at moderate speeds
Driving at high speeds increases aerodynamic drag and fuel consumption. Driving within the speed limit can help save fuel.
Plan your trips
Combine errands and plan your routes to minimize driving distance. This reduces unnecessary fuel consumption.
Drive efficiently
Avoid sudden accelerations and heavy braking. Maintaining a steady speed and anticipating traffic can help improve fuel efficiency.
Check your tyre pressure
Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, which can decrease fuel efficiency. Keep your tires properly inflated according to the recommendations in your car’s manual.
Reduce idling
Turn off your engine if you’re going to be parked for more than a minute or two. Idling burns fuel unnecessarily.
Proper maintenance
Regularly check and replace air filters, spark plugs, and engine oil as recommended by your car manufacturer. A well-maintained car operates more efficiently.
