What was your most recent trip and how long were you away for?
My journeys often take me off the beaten path, camping, and seeking out unique experiences that enrich my understanding of the world and its people in an ethereal beauty. I explored the stunning landscapes of Namibia in September 2023. Our accommodations included the serene Desert Quiver Camp in Sossusvlei and the luxurious Seaside Hotel and Spa in Swakopmund. The trip was filled with an array of exciting activities, making it a truly memorable experience.
Was it for business or pleasure, or a combination of both?
The journey was purely recreational, intended for rejuvenation and appreciation of Namibia’s breathtaking landscapes. It offered a serene escape to enjoy the tranquility of the desert.
What do you always travel with?
I always have my camera with me to capture and immortalize my experiences.
Who did you travel with?
I am normally a solo traveller, a choice I often make to fully immerse myself in the destinations I visit. Traveling alone allows me the freedom to explore, discover hidden gems, and connect more deeply with the local culture. This trip was filled with exciting adventures and unforgettable experiences.
What was your favorite part about your holiday?
Traveling to Namibia was an incredible experience filled with breathtaking moments all around. My favorite part was exploring the stunning landscapes from the towering red dunes of Sossusvlei and the Deadvlei Valley to the unpredictable weather of Swakopmund.
Is there anything you wish you had done differently?
Maybe I could have added more days in Namibia to visit the other places, allowing for more spontaneous detours and unplanned experiences along the way.
What touristy things did you get up to and what was the overall experience?
I engaged in several tourist activities that enriched my overall experience. A standout was a boat cruise in Walvis Bay, where we were not only treated to Oysters but also provided with insightful history about the area’s marine life. The presence of seals and pelicans added to the charm of the cruise, delighting everyone on board.
Another memorable experience was camel riding, guided by experienced camel handlers. However, the highlight of my trip was ascending Dune 45 to witness the mesmerizing views and sunrise, painting the sky with breathtaking colours. Adding to the adventure, I went on a thrilling quad biking excursion through the desert, offering a unique perspective of the landscape and providing an exhilarating experience.
What was the best thing you ate on your trip and what did you splurge on?
I indulged in a variety of local cuisines during my trip, including flavoursome game meats that offered a unique and delightful culinary experience.
Would you advise someone to go and if so, what should they do differently to you?
To make their experience unique and different from mine, they could consider alternative routes in other regions like the Caprivi Strip or the Kunene Region to experience different landscapes and wildlife. Instead of the typical tourist activities, they could also seek out more off-the-beaten-path experiences, like staying in a traditional house for tourists in the village. Those seeking more adventure could try skydiving over the desert, hot air ballooning at sunrise, or hiking the challenging Fish River Canyon.
What websites or services did you find the most helpful for planning/booking your trip?
I found the services provided by www.glamping-adventures.co.za to be exceptionally helpful and professional in facilitating the planning and booking of the trip. Their approach was thorough and informative, with two Zoom meetings arranged for pre-trip preparations. They also invited a Namibian travel agency representative with local expertise.
What advice would you give someone going there for the first time?
- Research and plan your itinerary in advance, especially if you’re visiting remote areas or during peak tourist seasons.
- Namibia’s climate can vary widely, so pack clothing suitable for both hot days and cool nights.
- The desert climate can be dehydrating, so drink plenty of water, especially if you’re engaging in outdoor activities.
- Respect the Wildlife
