May is a busy time for South African farmers, it’s either harvest season or the start of prepping for winter crops. But beyond the fields, the country’s agricultural calendar is in full swing with two major events putting Mzansi on the global agri map.
Kicking things off is the World Union of Wholesale Markets (WUWM) Conference, taking place from 14–16 May at the Sandton Convention Centre. It’s the world’s largest fresh produce market conference, and this year, Johannesburg — home to Africa’s biggest produce market — has the honour of hosting. The event will bring together over 200 member countries, uniting policymakers, industry leaders and innovators. The City’s mayor, Dada Morero, says it’s a clear sign of Joburg’s commitment to creating economic opportunities, from street vendors to international traders.

Meanwhile, just a few hours away in the Free State, Nampo Harvest Day is rolling into Bothaville with what’s estimated to be over R1 billion in equipment and exhibits. Running from 13–16 May at Nampo Park, this annual agri-fest is one of the largest in the southern hemisphere. Organisers expect nearly 900 exhibitors and thousands of visitors eager to explore the latest in machinery, climate-smart seeds, digital solutions, and all things farming.
This year’s theme, “Global Agriculture, Locally Rooted,” speaks to the need for local farmers to tap into global innovations while staying grounded in their communities. From sheep shearing to 4×4 demos, and from traditional boerekos to artisan crafts, Nampo is a feast for both agri pros and lifestyle lovers.

Whether you’re after hard-hitting insights or just want to soak in the vibe of modern farming, May is the month to do it.
