If you still look down on Chinese cars then I can’t help you. Times have changed and Chinese brands have become part of the South African life. My recent acquittance with the new JAC T9 4×4 came with a few surprises, but its weight is firmly on the ground. Although JAC is relatively new to the South African market, having entered in 2017, the brand has been around since 1964.
The Looks
The T9 is not shy in attempting to distinguish itself from the pack. Its aggressive front grille makes it noticeable and stands out. The wider and broader grille makes the T9 look a bit larger than its peers. The launch of the new JAC T9 marks a significant leap forward in the ever-evolving bakkie segment, particularly within the highly competitive bakkie market. Featuring a striking design that immediately catches the eye, the T9 impresses with its bold lines and robust stance.
Gone are the days when practical functionality was the sole focus; the T9 blends
aesthetic appeal with rugged capability, making it an attractive option for both city dwellers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. The new T9 boasts an aggressive front fascia, characterised by a prominent grille and sleek LED headlights that exude confidence. Its muscular body utilises sharp angles and curves that not only enhance its attractiveness but also improve aerodynamics — an essential feature for modern vehicles. The colours available for the T9 provide further customisation, allowing drivers to express their individuality while benefiting from a design that is both stylish and purposeful.
Under the hood
The JAC T9 has made impressive strides in technology and engineering compared to its predecessor. It features a robust 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel engine, delivering a commendable balance of power and fuel efficiency. It is also punchy.
This bakkie is equipped with advanced safety features, including multiple airbags, electronic stability control, and advanced driver assistance systems, ensuring a secure driving experience. Inside, the revamped cabin showcases high-quality materials, an intuitive infotainment system with a large touchscreen display, and connectivity features including Bluetooth and smartphone integration, bringing it in line with some of the best in the segment.
Who is JAC
The evolution of JAC and the Chinese automotive industry over the past decade has been remarkable. One of my neighbours drives an earlier model and seems satisfied with their bakkie. Once seen as budget- friendly choices, Chinese vehicles have quickly transformed into cars that focus on quality, durability, and modern design.
Through investments in research, development, and international partnerships, manufacturers like JAC are changing perceptions of Chinese brands. The T9 reflects this progress, positioning itself as a strong competitor to well-known brands.
The JAC T9 enters a competitive South African bakkie market, facing established rivals like the Toyota Hilux, Ford Ranger, and Isuzu D-Max. However, its unique blend of style, advanced technology, and affordability could attract buyers seeking alternatives to traditional options. With growing demand for bakkies that serve as both workhorses and lifestyle vehicles, the T9’s versatility, reliability, and feature-rich design may appeal to many South African consumers.
Verdict
The JAC T9 4×4 is not just another bakkie; it’s a fresh take on what a bakkie can be. With its striking design, advanced technology, and the ongoing progress of Chinese automotive engineering, the T9 is well- suited to attract drivers who want both practicality and style. As South African consumers become more demanding, the JAC T9 could be a strong alternative.
I’d recommend the JAC T9 to those who need a vehicle for both family and work, especially if they don’t require heavy-duty labour capabilities. Only time will tell if the T9 becomes a popular choice or remains a niche option.
