A short 3.5-hour flight from Johannesburg, Zanzibar is a paradise island and a popular destination among South Africans. It offers the chance to relax on white sandy beaches, experience diverse cultures, and witness breathtaking sunsets. Sibusisiwe enjoyed it all during an unforgettable solo trip to celebrate her birthday.

What was your most recent trip and how long were you away for?
I was in Zanzibar, a beautiful island destination for 10 days. It was a special trip to celebrate my 31st birthday and my first-ever solo travel experience. It was intentional about it being a solo trip, and I embraced every moment of it.
It was purely for pleasure, a much-needed break to reconnect with myself and reflect on my life and personal goals.
What was your favourite part about your holiday?
My favourite part was staying at Nungwi Beach for the first four days. Waking up to the serene sound of the ocean, watching both the sunrise and sunset daily and meeting wonderful people made the experience truly magical. I also loved taking time to journal and reflect.

Is there anything you wish you did differently?
Looking back, I wouldn’t change much, but if I had to do it again, I’d probably pack lighter. I also wish I had learned more Swahili phrases beforehand to engage with locals better.

What touristy things did you get up to and what was the overall experience?
I xplored quite a few places and the overall experience was incredible. I went to Prison Island where I got to relax and interact with giant tortoises. I visited Stone Town, got to see the Slave Market and historical sites like the Anglican Church. I also went on a sunset boat cruise, it was breathtaking, especially the sunset. I went on walks on the beach and went jet skiing at Nungwi Beach. I loved the mix of culture, history, and the natural beauty of Zanzibar.

What was the best thing you ate on your trip and what did you splurge on?
The best thing I ate was a local dish at Lukmaan’s restaurant in Stone Town. The biryani and chapati were delicious, and I highly recommend asking for Zilla, the chef! I splurged on the sunset boat cruise and the tours I took in Stone Town.

Would you advise someone to go and if so, what should they do differently to you?
Absolutely! Zanzibar is an amazing destination, and I encourage everyone to visit. My advice would be to bring US dollars instead of relying on ATMs. The local currency is quite low, and ATMs can run out of money. Also, learn a few basic Swahili phrases to connect better with the locals.

What websites or services did you find to be most helpful for planning/booking your trip?
I relied heavily on Booking.com for reviews of accommodations. Facebook travel groups such as From RSA to the World and Travelling to Zanzibar were also very helpful for tips and advice on Zanzibar’s best attractions and safety. For flights I used www.cheapflights.com
What advice would you give someone going there for the first time?
Zanzibar is predominantly a Muslim country, so be mindful of local customs, especially when away from the beaches. Pack a cover-up or light scarf for visits to cultural and religious sites. Stay in safe, well-reviewed areas, and make sure to carry a power bank, sunscreen, and comfortable shoes for xploring.
