I plan to drive to a remote area with no cell phone reception. What are the most important emergency items to keep in my car in case of a breakdown?

This is a fantastic question. You will be surprised at how many people overlook the
importance of being prepared for remote drives, especially in areas with no cell phone reception. I cannot over-emphasise the importance of always being prepared and set for anything!

First, pack a basic emergency kit: a first-aid kit, torch with spare batteries, jumper
cables, a tyre repair kit and a portable tyre inflator. Don’t forget to have plenty of
drinking water, non-perishable snacks and a fully charged power bank for your phone (in case of a breakdown where you are unable to charge your phone in your car, which might come in handy when you reach an area with network reception).

For safety, include a reflective triangle, a high-visibility vest and a whistle to attract
attention. A sturdy multi-tool and duct tape are surprisingly handy. In rural South African areas, personal safety is key, also consider having a pepper spray in your handbag for self-defence.

Lastly, tell someone your route and estimated return time. With a little preparation, you’ll have peace of mind and a safe journey.
