Winter travel in South Africa doesn’t have to mean flocking to the usual suspects. When the temperatures drop, some of the country’s most underrated destinations truly come alive, offering moody landscapes, fireside comforts, and a sense of stillness that’s hard to find in summer’s buzz. Here’s why these hidden gems are best xplored in the heart of winter.
Rhodes, Eastern Cape: A Snowy Secret in the Drakensberg
Why winter?
Rhodes is one of the few places in South Africa where snow is still a reality. In winter, the surrounding mountains often get dusted in white, transforming the area into a chilly, storybook escape. It’s perfect for those looking to experience a “European” winter feel, without leaving the country. Think firewood crackling, icy streams, and hot meals in stone cottages.
Must-do: Cosy up in a heritage sandstone house and take a scenic drive along the Naude’s Nek Pass, which is even more magical in winter mist.

Matjiesfontein, Western Cape: Time Travel Under Grey Skies
Why winter?
Matjiesfontein’s Victorian charm feels even more atmospheric during the colder months. Foggy mornings wrap around the old buildings, and the chill in the air gives even more reason to sip whisky in the Lord Milner Hotel’s grand lounge. Without summer tourists, the one-street town is quiet, intimate, and perfect for reconnecting with yourself or someone special.
Must-do: Board the Shosholoza Meyl train to arrive in style, and take the quirky museum tour bundled up in your winter coat.

Wakkerstroom, Mpumalanga: Where the Cold Brings the Birds
Why winter?
While many avoid wetlands in colder weather, Wakkerstroom’s birding season thrives in winter, drawing rare species and nature-lovers alike. The frost on the grass, the silence of the fields, and the fires burning in farm-style lodges make for a serene, soul-refreshing getaway.
Must-do: Pack your binoculars and enjoy a guided wetland walk, then head back for hot chocolate in a farmhouse kitchen.

Kokstad, KwaZulu-Natal: Mountain Chill with Farm Warmth
Why winter?
Tucked in the mountains, Kokstad is brisk and quiet in winter, offering space to reflect and breathe. Farms open their doors to guests with warm meals, blankets, and unbeatable views of frost-covered peaks. It’s ideal for those who want to unplug completely and swap city noise for silence and sheep bells.
Must-do: Spend an afternoon at Crystal Dam wrapped in scarves, then return for traditional supper at a local guesthouse.

Nieuwoudtville, Northern Cape: Before the Flowers, There’s Peace
Why winter?
Long before the flower crowds arrive in spring, Nieuwoudtville is a hidden winter retreat. The silence here is sacred. Clear skies stretch endlessly, and icy air encourages slow mornings and early nights. It’s a place to be still — to reflect, write, or simply stargaze.
Must-do: Stay on a working sheep farm, wake to fresh bread and moerkoffie, and marvel at the clearest Milky Way skies you’ll ever see.
