Revved up with Itu Motuba
Years ago, two of my friends and I woke up, had a brief chat about how much cash we each had, and just like that, decided to drive down to Durban. All it took was one of them saying, “Wouldn’t you like to have lunch in Durban?” and off we went — no planning, no packing lists, just vibes. How the trip went? Well, that’s a story for another day. But let’s just say this trip happened centuries ago. These days, travelling at my big-girl age is a whole production. It’s giving “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” the way I try to pack half my house into the boot. The keyword now? Comfort. And I’m not willing to compromise. I am at a point where I’m genuinely trying to figure out if it’s possible to take my bed with me. So how do we road trip smartly after 40? It’s possible — with a few clever hacks.

1.Pack smart, not heavy
Iron? What is that? I stopped buying clothes that need ironing ages ago. Layered, wrinkle-free clothing is what you want to pack. One pair of versatile shoes (yes, you can hike in sneakers). A scarf that can double as a pillow or shawl. And always bring that one outfit that makes you feel like Beyoncé stepping out of a tour bus.

2.Comfort is queen
Support cushions for your lower back. A light blanket. Sunglasses that actually fit your face. And don’t forget your meds, supplements, or anything else your body might start negotiating with halfway through the trip.
3.Curate your car entertainment
We’re too grown for awkward silences or bad radio. By the way, the rule is: the one who is driving, owns the playlist. If I’m driving, it better be to something I like that will make the road seem shorter as I sing along. Download playlists that tap into your nostalgia, podcasts that make you laugh or reflect, and ones that get you and your company chatting along.

4.Fuel your body, not just your tank
Gone are the days of chips and energy drinks for breakfast. Think biltong, fruit, trail mix, water (with electrolytes if needed). Trust me, your body will thank you after hour five. You’ll enjoy the trip more when no one is hangry.
5.Plan… but keep it loose
Plot your route with scheduled rest stops. Stretch your legs, snap a few pics, and don’t be afraid to detour for that charming little farm stall or roadside diner. Some of the best memories live off the beaten path. Also, make peace with the fact that there will be a lot of bathroom stops along the way.

6. If you have the means, go bigger!!!
If your day-to-day car is on the small side, rent a freakin’ comfortable SUV. Trust me, the legroom is needed, the comfort is unmatched, and you’ll thank me later when you’re cruising down the highway like royalty instead of being cramped up like sardines in a tin. So no, maybe I can’t pack light anymore, and maybe I do need a recovery day after the road trip — but these wheels still roll, and I still know how to chase a good view with good company. The body might be a little fragile, but I am convinced that we Gen X and Millennials will be young at heart for forever and ever.
