Africa’s Travel Indaba 2026 Is Back — and Durban Is Ready for the World

By Staff Writer

From yesterday's electric BONDay sessions to President Ramaphosa's opening address today, Africa's Travel Indaba 2026 is making its mark on the global tourism stage.

BONDay Sets the Scene

Before the trade floor officially opened, Durban was already alive with conversation. Africa's Travel Indaba 2026 kicked off on 11 May with BONDay (Business Opportunity Networking Day), launched by Deputy Minister of Tourism Makhotso Sotyu at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre in KwaZulu-Natal.

Far from a ceremonial warm-up, BONDay delivered a full slate of sessions that reflected where African tourism is genuinely heading. Topics ranged from sports tourism and digital transformation to a TikTok masterclass on converting social media inspiration into real bookings. Music, fashion and gastronomy as travel drivers also featured prominently, broadening the conversation well beyond traditional tourism thinking.

"It is where Africa's tourism sector comes together to share ideas, build connections, unlock trade, and shape a stronger future. It is where we position tourism not simply as travel, but as a serious driver of economic development," said Deputy Minister Sotyu.

Today: The Main Event Opens

The energy shifts up a gear today as President Cyril Ramaphosa officially opens Africa's Travel Indaba 2026, running under the theme Unlimited Africa: Growing Africa's Tourism Economy. His presence underscores just how seriously South Africa is treating tourism as a lever for economic growth.

More than 1,200 exhibitors, over 900 buyers from 70-plus countries, tourism ministers, airline executives and media professionals have converged on KwaZulu-Natal for what is widely regarded as one of the top three travel trade events on the global calendar. Trade meetings run through to 14 May, with more than 3,315 meetings already scheduled.

Tourism Minister Patricia de Lille captured the ambition of the gathering at the official media launch: "Through the geographic spread of tourism, the sector creates job opportunities and stimulates investment even in the most remote villages."

The Numbers Behind the Buzz

The scale of this year's Indaba speaks for itself. All nine South African provinces are represented among the exhibiting companies, 22 African countries are participating, and 191 micro, small and medium enterprises have earned a seat at the table alongside established operators and luxury lodges. This edition also marks the start of a five-year hosting arrangement for Durban, cementing KwaZulu-Natal as the long-term home of Africa's premier travel trade show.

Durban: More Than Just a Venue

Durban is not merely a backdrop to all of this. The city's subtropical climate, Zulu cultural heritage, spice markets, beachfront and world-class convention infrastructure make it a destination that sells itself to every international delegate who arrives.

eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba put it plainly: "The City's strategic location, well-developed infrastructure, and warm climate continue to position Durban as a destination of choice, whether for business or leisure." The economic stakes are equally compelling. The 2024 edition generated over R500 million for Durban's economy, and organisers are confident 2026 will surpass that.

Africa's Moment

Africa's Travel Indaba has always been more than a trade show. As Deputy Minister Sotyu noted, "Africa is among the fastest growing tourism regions globally. This signals that the continent is no longer in recovery mode but entering a new expansion phase."

With the 2027 edition already in planning and private sector partnerships set to strengthen future events, the momentum is real. African tourism is not waiting for the world to come to it. It is going out to meet it.
