The GWM family decided to wake us up one early morning in August to parade their newest offering. Grumpy as we were, having left Johannesburg on a red-eye flight, we were never ready for what they had in store for us.
Embarking on a thrilling drive through South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes, our journey began in the charming town of George, winding through rugged and mountainous terrain before arriving at the picturesque town of Knysna.
This adventure showcased the new GWM Tank500 and P500, two of the latest offerings from the automotive brand.
We stayed overnight at the opulent Pezula Nature Reserve, providing a luxurious contrast to the wild terrains we had traversed (you are welcome to read about the amazing Pezula here: xploreza.co.za/pezula-nature-reserve-a-five-star-escape-into-south-africas-serenity . But for now, let’s see how these two models performed in this demanding environment and how they measure up against their competitors in the SUV and bakkie market.
We had our pick of the litter and I immediately jumped at a metallic black GWM Tank500, a full-sized SUV, impressed from the outset by its commanding presence and robust features. Designed for the adventurer who desires both luxury and durability (so yes, me), the Tank500 comes equipped with a 2.0-litre turbocharged V6 engine, delivering a potent 255kW of power and 648Nm of torque.
Its advanced 4WD system, coupled with high ground clearance, made light work of the challenging routes through the mountainous terrains. Inside, the Tank500 boasts a high-tech infotainment system, leather upholstery, and a spacious cabin that comfortably accommodates passengers and gear alike.
The journey through the rough, mountainous roads from George to Knysna was a true test of these vehicles’ capabilities. The Tank500 demonstrated its prowess in navigating steep inclines and rocky paths, thanks to its sophisticated terrain management system. Its electronic differential lock and hill descent control ensured smooth and controlled movement even in the most challenging conditions. With an infotainment system that is loud enough to hold a festival down, I was absolutely impressed.
In contrast, the GWM P500, a formidable bakkie, brings a different set of strengths to the table. While it shares the Tank500’s rugged capabilities, the P500’s 2.0-liter turbo diesel engine is tailored for those who need a vehicle that can handle heavy loads and tough conditions.
The P500 excels in towing and payload capacity, making it ideal for both work and adventure. Its dual-cab design provides ample space for both passengers and cargo, while its robust suspension system ensured that it handled the rough terrain with impressive stability.
Our overnight stay at the Pezula Nature Reserve highlighted the Tank500’s and P500’s contrasting strengths in a luxury setting. The Chinese have gone all out on these new models. The Tank500, with its plush interior and refined features, provided a fitting end to a day of rugged driving, offering a seamless transition from adventure to relaxation. The spacious and comfortable cabin was a perfect retreat after the day’s exertions. On the other hand, the P500, while more utilitarian, was still well-appointed and offered a practical and rugged comfort that would appeal to those who value functionality over luxury.
When compared to other SUV and bakkie brands available in South Africa, both the Tank500 and P500 stand out for their value and capabilities. The Tank500 competes directly with models like the Toyota Land Cruiser and Ford Everest, offering comparable off-road prowess and luxury at a competitive price point.
Its advanced features and powerful engine place it as a strong contender in the full-size SUV market. I do however, foresee a very competitive market as many would probably still opt for loyalty as opposed to discovering the new and fresh.
The P500, meanwhile, faces competition from popular bakkies such as the Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux. Its strong performance, high payload capacity, and rugged design make it a formidable rival.
The P500’s ability to combine utility with comfort sets it apart, appealing to those who need a workhorse that doesn’t compromise on daily usability or adventure readiness. Interesting times ahead for team GWM, however, they have very formidable avengers on their side.
In summary, the GWM Tank500 and P500 have proven their mettle through a demanding journey, showcasing their individual strengths and capabilities. Whether navigating rugged terrains or relaxing in luxury, both vehicles offer impressive performance and value. As they compete in the competitive South African SUV and bakkie markets, their distinct qualities and robust features make them noteworthy choices for both adventurous drivers and practical users alike.
